Caramba reports that the ad hoc band Who Cares will be going to the studio next Wednesday, October 6, to record a song called Out of my Mind for the benefit of the music school in Gyumri, Armenia. This is the project Big Ian spoke about before. The band, as it stands now, is comprised of Ian Gillan, Tony Iommi, Nicko McBrain and Jon Lord. No word on who will take the bass duties.

September 30th, 2010 at 23:35From a humanitarian standpoint, kudos to those willing to take the time out for a good cause. This is a charity very close to Gillan’s heart. I’m sure his efforts are much appreciated and all involved should be commended for trying to make a difference.
From a musical standpoint, however, it is difficult to get excited over a single song. These things tend to be quick re-makes of old numbers using star musicians to grab the attention needed in order to support the cause. The lackluster “Smoke on the Water” all-stars from years ago comes to mind–something fun to contemplate given the people involved, but not something to listen to every day.
Had the news been that this line-up was to form a band and is recording a complete album would be an entirely different matter.
A thousand percent better than BCC? Not likely. Just a morsel–not a meal.

I’m not so easely distracted.
I’m still waiting for a DP new album.
That isn’t even a possible dream, but a fan’s wish that became a nightmare.
Perhaps incredible would be:
DP with Gillan, Glen Hughes on the base, and instead of Spaghettibone Steve, Iommi, then Airey and Paice !
Why I skip Glover and Morse..? We own Morse by the ‘talent of choice’ from Glover. 🙁
Morse can’t compose,can’t play hard rock, and Glover neither …ecxept on the shoulders of other talented atists.
Steve is not on his place in DP, Glover isn’t anymore…
All the DP family seems to be creative and artistic…except the combination of this five DP members.
I truly don’t know why I should be happy with this news…it makes me sad.
I like to add, that if DP had made and were making this current band power- and respectful, then I would have enjoyed this news with excitement.

To a certain degree I agree with Annemie. Not regarding whether or not Morse and Glover can play hard rock (they both do that very well, especially LIVE), but regarding the present combination and their collective creative collaboration. They have waited way too long between albums now to the point that I even am feeling negative about my heroes. Thus far, what they have done in Purple and Out I am totally satisfied with regarding their quality of records….I am thoroughly displeased at this point though with their quantity.
By the way…My other Hero ‘Alice Cooper’ was finally selected to be inducted into the ‘Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’ in 2011. Long overdue as with Purple. Check out the link below:

Yeah, Roger GROVER took part in writing all Deep Purple fantastic albums, let alone playing on songs like: ‘Highway Star’, ‘Smoke on the Water’, ‘Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming’, ‘Rapture of the Deep’. All my life I thought it was Glover. Shame on me! 😉

October 2nd, 2010 at 00:04To musicians fans are indeed a very important stakeholder group. And like any other stakeholder group fans can and maybe should express their expectations and desires. But their comments should be ethical, not destructive and for certain not below the belt. Every member of Deep Purple (past, present and future) is a talented and gifted musician. The b(r)and is the result of the combination of each member’s personality and skills.
Personally, I like almost every album released under the Deep Purple brand and I appreciate most of the side projects. I think it’s great, that you can get in contact with a wide variaty of musical styles by simply wandering through the Deep Purple branches.
I would recommend to be happy whenever you get notice of Deep Purple coming to your region. It is really fun watching all the members playing together on a stage. Appreciate every side project – it means that the chances are high that you will listen to a new piece of music that you will like.
Finally, it is my belief, that someone is only good at things if he likes what he is doing. Therefore, I let the members of Deep Purple decide about their future. At least, Deep Purple is their brand not mine. If they would turn to Techno music for example, I would be very sad and I cannot imagine of buying such a record. However, if that’s what they want or need, then they should go ahead. In such a case, I would look elsewhere for music that I like until they meet my musical desires again.

i personally enjoy everything as long as it’s good music.
then i’m having a look on who did it and later trying to find out more about their recordings. that’s it. very simple.
there are sometimes words of the “purple family” – i know, that family isn’t friendship at the same time.
i started listening to DP at the age of 13 and found a new world with lots of different facettes that showed me who different influences come together to create some great music.
i love Ritchie Blackmore! killer riffs, killer solos. …but i’m not so much into his post-DP/-Rainbow project.
i love big Ian. “Fighting Man” is one of my favorites.
David Coverdale. i do prefer the classic Whitesnake-era, but Coverdale Page was also a killer album to me.
Roger is truely a fine gentleman. he enjoys the band, tries to keep things going – a working man. his songwriting credits are often overshadowed by Gillan or Blackmore in earlier days.
Tommy Bolin. i’m so sad that i did’nt get the chance to see him live on stage. (i was only 5 years old when he died.) when you listen to his recordings with Billy Cobham or Alphonse Mouzon you will understand how much of a musician he was. he had a very unique sound like few others. my all-time favorite: “Wild Dogs”. still makes me cry.
Glenn Hughes was so productive during the last 20 years. maybe massy but not classy. there are great songs on almost every solo record he did. BCC is a killer band. this is Jasons chance to show his skills. so bad that Sherinian is too low in the final mix. and yes: Glenn is THE VOICE OF ROCK. (sorry David)
Turner. i liked some tracks from “purple rainbow” album, but like Jon Lord said in an interview, it lacked an up-tempo rocker like “Gypsy’s Kiss” or “Dead Or Alive”. yes, he’s the “Spotlight Kid” and he has a great voice that fitted very well into DP.
i could go on like this.

No matter who of the usual suspects will turn out to be the bass player! Brings back memories of the early 80s really, when I was first discovering all that great music…!! I thoroughly look forward to it and my secret wish is they’d do more than just that one thing…

As for my thoughts after reading Iommi as the ‘greatest rock guitarist’ – Naw! However, Tony and Jon together recording a studio track for the first time? seems cool to me, although something tells me Jon won’t be there tomorrow and willl be sending his part in????? If so it’s no real band, just a distant project between some good artists.
As for Purple and an album, I’ll think about it when they get around to it, which is like watching paint dry. It’s becoming so annoying it’s as if they’re snubbing the fans. Can they still write good songs? Well, with the feel of us behind them to inspire them, I’m sure they can, but take a look at the hardware here….
BCC? By far and wide the best album for my money since DEEP PURPLE’S PURPENDICULAR! There is not one note of complete focus lost in the outcome of their work, it’s as good as good gets these days.

October 5th, 2010 at 23:51I do not care if he ever writes another hard rock song as long as he lives, but if he can contain himself on this one, or another DP album… who am I to keep my word? lol! It just doesn’t look likely. He can do so much better singing stuff like “Over and Over” on the 2nd JL and the HC Men.(brilliant) Or his latest solo offering.(again, brilliant!) And I’m sure the series Ep’s he is working on releasing in 2011 will be of that same quality and have little to nothing to do with hard rock. I’m afraid it’s the hard rock factor that is beginning to deminish in his voice, nothing more to my ears… we all grow up someday… let it be! Still a fine singer underneeth the poor rock market he seems to be so attached to. This should apply to Coverdale as well, concentrate on strength’s, not weeknesses. The strength being in the low register, run with it guys!(do it while it’s still in style)

u got the point! those great singers from the 70s should be aware of their ageing voice and their implied possibilities.
“Restless Heart” was maybe one step in the right direction for Mr. Coverdale. and to me “One Eye On Morocco” is one of the better projects by Gillan, as it’s more about music and not about screaming.
some of all these musicians realized their chances to cross borders and work with others to find if there’s exciting music to adventure.
me too, i’m still waiting for another DP record. not because there’s a musical revelation or sensation to come, but i had the subliminal feeling that their last recordings had been unfinished. maybe it’s time for them to focus again on songwriting – jamming might not be enough.
i still prefer the “Abandon” album (considering the Morse era). the songs sound written. written by someone who knows the musical skills of the band. “Bananas” & “Rapture Of The Deep” are maybe too loose.
is it enough to tour year by year in Germany with little changes in the setlist? in the early days they tried new songs on the road before recording! (last time they tried it was in 2002 with “Up The Wall” (= early version of “I Got You’re Number”) & “Long Time Gone”)

No confusion at all!
I think many of us became increasingly aware, that they are just EXPLOITING and CHURNING OUT the old DP material for years now.
They are DISUSING their own made songs, and complete BRUSHING ASIDE -or being UNABLE to create – new material.
This still growing awakening makes almost every fan sad and cynical, also comparing and learning.
But when true loving/caring about a human or a band…one should always get a second try-out and chance.
That would be A TRUE HARD ROCK ALBUM.
When that’s not possible…after requesting AGAIN AND AGAIN…
When the human or the band doesn’t care or try at all…you know the cure…or should I say the issue !

My ears are in ecxellent shape. My brain/soul to find permanent creative, enriching artistic hard rock composition/contribution of those two too.
And sorry, my knowledge especially about Glover is a lot more then I ever would/should write down.
Steve is just the right man at the wrong place as someone else said so to the point some time ago.

Regarding the old “new Deep Purple album issue” I have a simple view. Either there’s potential, then they will record a new album after touring this winter, or they will split next year. I feel like many others too that there’s some sort of stagnation. How long can an artist live with that anyway? If a bottle of fine whisky is empty then keep its name in mind and throw it away, but don’t sell empty bottles!
@54: To my taste “Purpendicular” is far superior to “Abandon”. It sounds fresh and exciting. It sounds indeed very written too when you consider something like “Cascades” or “Sometimes I Feel Like Sreaming”. Abandon hasn’t tunes which come anywhere close to that. To me “Purpendicular” has been their best studio effort after “Perfect Strangers” till today and a strong statement that there’s still a Deep Purple after Blackmore.

October 10th, 2010 at 21:26Blackmore did have to play a bass line or two on LLRAR, however much he doesn’t understand the instrument’s point. Try researching Mark Clark’s part in it all, you will find little left to credit Blackmore with concerning bass on said album. Mr.Dio also wrote some melodies on said album that Ritchie dismisses. It wasn’t exactly a picnic.

October 13th, 2010 at 02:46Tony Iommi has to do something new anyway because of the unfortunate passing of Ronnie James Dio whether it be in Who Cares or doing horror film soundtracks(awesome).I am still hoping, because of the incredible resurgence of support for the old rock bands nowadays,that he will do another Sabbath Album(after he fucks up ozzy and his trash wife Sharon in court). Tony Martin is still sounding incredible, would dig to hear those two in the studio again. Whether u think Headless Cross, Tyr were not sabbath albums because Ozzy wasn’t there, take your head out of your ass as the music was incredible know matter what you called the band. For Me Iommi is Sabbath. It’s just so great that he is collaborating here. Don’t agree with arties recommendation earlier of John Myung as bassist though. Rather a Rinus Gerritsen,Pete Trewavas or Bob Daisley. I personally would have wanted Simon Wright on drums as his ability to hold a solid energetic powerful rhythm would power whatever Iommi thunders out a lot better than McBrain who is beginning to sound a little tired, He was a fantastic drummer for Maiden in the past but I feel he is now just going through the motions. As for an album from these guys instead of just a one teasing song….hope it comes to fruition. Something to live for man.

Looks like the folks whom miss the original lineup have something to possibly look forward to…..

October 29th, 2010 at 14:47I saw C Z years ago in Rotterdam doing a class and tellin the audience about Deep Purple and that they kinda nicked the intro to Radar Love from Highway Star.
It seemed that the only one who had a smile in the audience was me.
The rest stared empty at him when he mentioned DP.
And that was around 1990!!!!
Iommi is a real B†S,Ozzy has become a clown,so I’d like to see Iommi Butler (also Appice) under another project or name..with another singer (there are a lot of them inspite of)…
