The contemporary blurb from 2017 reads:

Jo Whiley presents highlights from Deep Purple’s recent concert at the BBC Radio Theatre. One of the biggest names in rock, they perform some of their biggest hits from the past 5 decades. These include Black Night, Hush, Perfect Strangers, Bloodsucker and the classic, Smoke On The Water as well as tracks from their latest album, Infinite.

Before their November performance, the band’s drummer and founding member Ian Paice said: “We’re really looking forward to performing for BBC Radio 2 In Concert. It’s been many years since we did something like this. But through all those years one thing has never changed. Playing live is the only way to capture the spirit of Rock n Roll music, because even 60 years after it reared its wonderful rebellious head that’s what it still is! There is no safety net of the recording machine to ‘fix things later’, you get it right or get it wrong. For the musicians it’s, an adrenaline rush, concentration and invention, but most of all it’s fun. That’s why we started doing it when we were kids. We hope you have fun too being on the receiving end.”

The recent series of special In Concert performances were held to mark BBC Radio 2’s 50th birthday, featuring a line-up of legendary performers from the past 5 decades.

Thanks to Marcus for the heads-up, and to Deep Purple Tour Page for the setlist.

Just my two cents worth, but can’t someone talk Jo into doing backing vocals for DP live – her presence would greatly enhance the line-up if you ask me.

A stellar show that’s been kickin’ ’round YouTube for a few years,The first 3 tunes are real ” Go for the throat “rockers. There’s a fair chunk of inFinite and the well-trodden Machine Head is pared down to a coupla songs . The band is strong, and the studio audience is appreciative.Well worth a watch.

    Great concert and setlist
    PS
    Killer look from Don:)

My wife is right (she of course always is), why did no one ever talk Steve out of his horrible printed tank tops and T-shirts (often decorated with the worst Native American airbrush kitsch imaginable?)? Karin!!! Say something!!!

Act your age and wear a real shirt for chrisssakes! 🤣

No complaints about Herr Gillan please! I know his “Nehru outfit” drove Roger into desperation at the time, but I liked it! Very Gillan and stylish. While Steve always looked like the bike mechanic from the Harley-Davidson garage next door. 😎

The 1999 RAH Concerto was one of the few gigs in DP’s history where everyone was decently dressed. Not always one of Purple’s strong points it has to be said.

    “I tend to agree!”

@ 1- I think Don Airey could be possibly thinking along those lines too Uwe. Cheers.

Those keyboard players and their unruly hands.

I’ve been calling him sleeveless Morse for years. The only time he did not wear a sleeveless shirt was during the Concerto and I thought he looked great. I loved it.

    Yes Sir ☺️
I have to admit I never see their outfits🤭
Unless it’s very alarming I focus on their overall appearances.
And Steve Morse has this adorable smile that steal all attention!
Ian G’s Nehru look looks so comfy and I guess the more comfortable the guys are feeling the better they perform, so no complaints from this side 😊

    MacGregor says:

It looks fine Uwe, Mr Morse’s attire. The one we worry about is the new banjo player Simon & his choice of hair stylist. Sheeesh & you are picking on Steve, shame on you. At least he had long hair. I would have thought with Mr McBride being in line for the guitar job, at least Glover would have remembered 1979 & the problem with Graeme Bonnets hair, or lack of it. So a simple, ‘yes Simon we would like you to join the band, but that hair, any chance of an improvement’? Cheers.

SMcB’s hair is cute! He looks like 1) used way to much styling gel or 2) is an unfortunate electrician 😄 either way, it really works for him, and he has that cheeky appearance ☺️

  12. 12
    MacGregor says:

@ 11 – ‘an unfortunate electrician’, I like that, well done. Trying to be serious again with the fashion stakes being so high. DP management talking here, ‘Simon as you are aware Deep Purple are a hard rock band per se, you do realise that don’t you’? ‘ We are not Duran Duran, if that is a better way to explain it to you’. Cheers.

  13. 13
    stoffer says:

@4 what about RG’s sleeveless rag he wore for years and Gillans cheap ass T-shirts!!! At least on this tour IG is dressing better….Steve Morse looked just fine showing his appreciation for Native Americans!

  14. 14
    Uwe Hornung says:

Receding hairlines and Deep Purple guitarists are nothing new, so Simon is in a fine tradition of Ritchie and Joe (Satch). I believe the only DP guitarist with good (unaugmented) hair was Tommy B. As for Steve’s wispy semblance of a haircut, I impolitely concur … wait for it, other way around, politely disagree, Herr MacGregor, that never looked good. What is it with you, all that biblical Samson hair insecurity? Get a grip. Hairless men are the crown of evolution.

    “Unfortunate electrician”, LOL, Karin!!!

Regarding BBC and Deep Purple, have just been re-watching Last night at the Proms 2024, and we talked about whether Deep Purple ever have had any of the nursing’s played there?

I’m not thinking of DP with London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall, even though it’s great 🤩 no the actual Last Night at the Proms!

If all this still excist in a couple of 100s of years, which song besides SOTW would be performed?
    I hope Show Me ☺️

    VD says:

If I had arms like Steve’s, I wouldn’t wear sleeves either.

  17. 17
    Uwe Hornung says:

Sigh, Herr MacGregor is a deeply conservative man, very entrenched in his views shaped some half-century ago. When you play with DP you need long hair (even if it’s fake) and Duran Duran can‘t rock shit.

    If only.

great performance by the boys on the BBC, Ian Gillan sang very well, Steve was monstrous, maybe his best version of Perfect Strangers is here, he does a continuous memorable job

    MacGregor says:

@ 18 – Oh please oh please Uwe, cannot you do any better than that. A cheap shot if ever there was one. I agree with stoffer @ 13. And I was going to say the same but forgot to when going into my Duran Duran phase. It is what it represents & good on Steve for doing that. Are we going to start splitting hairs now? By the way I never ever implied that Duran Duran couldn’t ‘rock shit’. Where did you get that from? You started the ‘vanity’ comments, you wear it. Pun intended. Cheers.

  21. 21
    MacGregor says:

@ 18 – Thanks for the Redbone clips, I have never heard of them. Cheers.

  22. 22
    Uwe Hornung says:

You of all people mentioning Prince’s former muse Vanity is actually a good thing, Herr MacGregor, let it all hang out, yeah!

Not heard of Redbone? Wounded Knee was banned from airplay in the US, but you haven’t heard their other hits either?

This of course became famous once again via the opening scene of Guardians of the Galaxy …

They weren’t just a singles act, they took their Native American heritage quite serious.

    MacGregor says:

@ 22 – I did check out a few other Redbone songs yesterday & read that about them. Not surprised about that song being banned, the truth hurts. Apparently they were big in The Netherlands, at least some commentators at youtube were saying that. I will ask my Dutch friend who was a teenybopper hippy wannabe at that time, he he he. She was right into all sorts of music anyway. She even met Jimmy Lea & a few others backstage at a Slade gig. Starstruck indeed apparently. Embarrassed about it these days though, not sure why but looking back can sometimes do that, depending on the situation. Cheers.

  25. 25
    MacGregor says:

@ 22- well Uwe my Dutch friend loved being reminded of a long forgotten & pleasant memory. She previously had owned two albums of Redbone & went to a concert & it was a full house & a great night. Thanks for all that info. Cheers.

  26. 26
    Uwe Hornung says:

It’s nice to see Redbone find some reappreciation, danke, they have really been largely forgotten though the feature of Come And Get Your Love in a Marvel blockbuster must have improved the pension funds of Pat and Lolly Vegas no end. The brothers were of Mexican American and Native American descent, you know how the Spaniards/Conquistadors were never too particular about mingling their DNA with indigenous people wherever they went, they were more class- & religion- than race-conscious.

Mind you, Pat and Lolly didn’t always flaunt their tribesmen heritage as they did with Redbone. Before 60s counter-culture adopted Native American mythology as inherently anti-capitalistic and anti-colonial, they were quite happy fitting the Hispanic mold.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAPLiAnGzqU

You can still recognize the Native American features in their faces even then though, it wasn’t an act. And that a song as poignant as ‘We Were All Wounded At Wounded Knee’ was de facto banned from airplay in the US as late as the mid-70ies is a friggin’ scandal, Manitou’s wrath shall be upon the palefaces swarming the prairie like locusts forever!
