That’d be eight then

black country communion V cover art

Metal Talk has a review of Black Country Communion’s new album V (due out tomorrow, June 14th). And this one is not shy with superlatives either.

Forget the Hanging Gardens Of Babylon or The Great Pyramid Of Giza; one of the true seven wonders of the world is the 72-year-old voice of Glenn Hughes.

In an age where the authenticity of both live and studio vocals are looked on in some quarters with suspicion, the purity of the Wolverhampton man’s pipes are beyond astounding. On the blues fuelled Red Sun and Restless it’s no exaggeration to say he is performing at an even higher level than when he parachuted into Deep Purple Mark III in 1973.

Given all of the recent positive press they have been garnering, seems maybe Glenn Hughes’ comments about BCC being among the top five bands on the planet, was NOT hyperbole after all!!

Now if only JoBo could commit!

    Uwe Hornung says:

Glenn has his fans. I’m not alone.

People in Canada are already getting carried away … 😂

I like Glenn… in smallish doses.

    Auntie Purplette says:

Uwe @3, Glenn is a nice young man with a lovely voice. And because he is so polite and gracious, I am considering making a recommendation to the Governor-General that Glenn be considered for honourary Canadian citizenship!

    Uwe Hornung says:

You mean like in “Abso-fucking-lutely no funk riffs, Glenn, and stick that falsetto where it belongs!”, Jaffa? 🤣

    André says:

I listened to BCC V. My first impression wasn’t a good one, but after several times listening to the cd, I can say that this is really a big big bang, an absolute rocker, and yes, actually one of the best classic rock bands. But there is one problem: BCC themselves, at least Jo. They don’t believe in their own work. No promotion, no serious touring. What a mess. I see Derek posting regularly reels on instagram, but that’s all. Come on guys, be serious, none of your side or solo projects are on the level of BCC. Even for you, Jo, even for you, Glenn. So stuck together and give us the live shows we need. Otherwise shame on you… but a lhousand of thanks for your bombastic music ! And long live “the cave”, a really great magic producer.

  8. 8
    DeeperPurps says:

Andre @7……the problem is Joe. He doesn’t want to commit to being in a band. He wants to do his own thing. Unfortunate…..such a wasted opportunity.

    Uwe Hornung says:

Auntie Purplette, what are your preferred pronouns now? 🤣

Says the bad aunt: “Glenn is a spoiled single child always clamoring for attention with an unpleasantly shrill voice. And his bass playing gives me migraine.” 😵‍💫😂

    Auntie Purplette says:

Good question Uwe @9. In fact our esteemed friend Gregster uses it regularly and I am now considering using it as well, after having found validation for said term in a July 2023 New York Times article entitled: “””Is ‘Yo’ the Gender-Neutral Pronoun You’ve Been Looking For?”””

Just trying to come to terms with your multiple personalities!

  12. 12
    Dr. Lao says:

Curious Uwe @11…..when it comes to personalities, the sky’s the limit! It all depends on The Color Purple on any given day, and how Purple I might be feeling.

Oddly, there are some who suffer an affliction called “Porphyrophobia” – an intense fear of purple. For certain people, the color triggers severe anxiety or panic attacks….perhaps it’s not for nothing that some rock journos avoid or ignore Deep Purple!!

I could go on, but as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. And a video is worth even more than that!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOvqqD8kVw0

  13. 13
    Dr. Bob says:

I saw Glenn on his Purple tour last year and will see him again in Sept. I have to agree that his voice at his age is unbelievable.

  14. 14
    Uwe Hornung says:

Honorable Dr Lao: Judging from the trailer, that movie has “CULT!” stamped all over it, I have to see it!

“Porphyrophobia”, I’m surprised that Big Ian hasn’t named an album like that yet. It does sound like something the avid crossword puzzler would have run across by now. 😂

    From Urban Dictionary;

    “porphyrophile

Someone obsessed with the color purple, to disturbing extremes.”

I guess we all here qualify then!

Vielen Dank for widening my vocabulary. I was so far only aware that “purple” is one of the more complex, disputed colors with a wide range of meanings, just read under “Optics” here, it is bound to make your head spin:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple

Even our beloved band has been less than consistent
in what ‘purple’, much less ‘deep purple’ really means. If you follow the color of Jon’s frilly shirt on the DP debut, they should have been called “Light Lilac” (or even “Mighty Mauve” 🤣) as a band. Yet the inner sleeve of the eponymously named third album was indeed deep (or imperial/royal) purple. On merchandise, promotion material and later album sleeves to this day, I have seen a vast array of shades of the lilac/purple/violet family, even pink, ranging from the basically blue to the almost red. A color that is hard to pin down, much like the band.

Yes it is a good word that one & I have never heard that before. Shallow Lavender is a name I often think of when being silly with the Deep Purple name. As Uwe said there are other ‘names’ also. Cheers.

    Mighty Mauve! 😀

I couldn’t help but notice in the Wikipedia all things Purple ‘Idioms and Expressions’ section:
“Purple prose refers to pretentious or overly embellished writing. For example, a paragraph containing an excessive number of long and unusual words is called a purple passage. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, interesting”. I did get the ‘Purple Haze’ feeling though, back in the day. A little more serious now, well not really:
“In medieval Europe, purple represented leadership and the king.
In European alchemy during this time, “the ‘precious purple tincture'” was a term for various substances alchemists hoped to create. The term and goal of the alchemist evoked kingliness”. Is that why Blackmore wore that hat & dabbled with the ouija board? It is finally revealed, well to me it is. Things move slowly out here in Australia, including our minds, well my mind at least. It is all that Purple Haze that did it. Cheers.

    Cheers.

    Uwe Hornung says:

OMFG, the deceptive Dr Lao wasn’t joking either …

    https://youtu.be/ad9dTNmfYLQ

From my clinical experience, a most frequent comorbidty of porphyrophobia – especially in its terminal stage – is the dreaded Led Zeppelinism, a neuro-disease that unfortunately is, but should never be …

  19. 19
    Dr. Lao says:

Grasshopper Uwe @14, you have studied diligently and learned your lessons well. Yes indeed, the wider Purple palette offers much to explore, both visually and aurally.

And you have raised an excellent point about the erudite Big Ian as it relates to the term porphyrophobia. I submit humbly, I am numb that said word not yet across he stumble, in his word jumbles? And odd that among the plethora of prose passages perused, our purple hero has yet to perceive it. Perchance, an opportunity to propound same!!

And now, a question to ponder……imagine if the beloved band which we “porphyrophiles” hold so high in esteem had originally chosen as its moniker: the metallic and dare I say, violent – “Ultra Violet”, or the more classic and progressive “purpureus profundis”; or perhaps a more heavy, hard-rocking “Granite Grape”………might any of those names have changed their trajectory, and if so, in what way?

    Uwe Hornung says:

Master Lao, how you humble me!

    https://images.app.goo.gl/qftrR1Zk15EprZVj7

I always liked Deep Purple as a name, long before I knew or understood the music, it had a nice flow to it. And I always dug the color as well – I readily admit to my metrosexual tendencies -, great for underwear too, especially if you are green-skinned and have good muscle tone, albeit considerable anger management issues.

    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/aa/Hulk_%28circa_2019%29.png

In Germany, the Deep Purple name pretty soon became the butt of jokes as ‘Die Popel”, which sounds similar, but is a reference to, yes, nose boogers. Never minded that, I thought it was funny and we all pick’em when we deem ourselves unwatched. 😂

  21. 21
    Max says:

… and don’t forget that cover-band by the name of “Die Bärbel im Rock” … sometimes on the same bill as “Juttas Brüscht” …

  22. 22
    MacGregor says:

nice image Uwe @ 20. However it does have me wondering, where does the bass guitar fit in? Regarding other possible names instead of DP, can we use the known album titles with those different names? Granite Grape ‘Come Taste the Band’ would work in that sense. Or even Granite Grape ‘In Rock’. Trying to create a band name, memories there indeed & how long does it take before we settle on one. Some of the band names that I have noticed over time & I always think ‘how long did it take them to come up with that’? Especially when it is a bad or poor name. Cheers.

    Uwe Hornung says:

The group of individuals otherwise known as ‘DeeperPurps/Auntie Purplette/Dr Lao’, those shifters of worlds, have single-, well, multi-handedly bestowed a new term for our community here: PPP as in PorPhyroPhiles. We must thank them for this easy to remember, write (and pronounce!) piece of identity development!

    https://media1.tenor.com/m/kTHhkIlCtQYAAAAC/clapping-lord-of-the-rings.gif

It sure does sound more dignified than “Die Pobel Fans” if you ask me.

Herr MacGregor, you deep burrowing marsupial, what a find! I never knew that the title of “Purple Passages”, that 1972 US Warner Brothers release of Mk I material in the wake of Mk II’s Machine Head success,

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_Passages ,

was actually a clever word play! And really fitted well because the music of Mk I was – in line with the Vanilla Fudge role model – indeed overflourished and -ornamented.

And since we’re at it, when did the designation of ‘Mk’ or ‘Mark’ for DP line-ups take hold? In Germany, it was widely introduced via this late 1973 release (with the alluring cover of a femal abdomen in the process of being unzipped, the belly button decorated with a Union Jack – all done in very good, non-sexist taste I assure you!) here

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_I_%26_II ,

but does anyone know when the reference to ‘Mks’ became de rigueur when speaking of Purple (the Mk I, II, III & IV specification only really took hold in Germany after Purple’s dissolution in 1976)? I can’t believe it was a German invention, we only knew the term from, say, “Spitfire Mk V” or “Jaguar E-Type Mk I”, it has a very Brit connotation to us. In past interviews, various DP members have always stated that it was NOT a designation they themselves used when referring to the various line-ups (even though I’ve gained the impression that this has changed over time, DC and Glenn for instance always use ‘Mk III + IV’ when referring to the line-ups they played in).

Anybody got a clue when the term was first widely used in the UK and by whom? I would assume the British music press started using it.

  24. 24
    MacGregor says:

That Mark I & II best of collection Uwe I did have years ago, purely for the b sides etc. And talking of ‘alluring’ best of collections what about that record company released double Pink Floyd album, A Nice Pair. I used to own the original Golden Earring Moontan album also. My favourite album of theirs, a little progressive etc. That cover is censored or different these days I noticed when looking to buy the cd last week. At least the Golden Earring album cover is a genuine one, not a gimmick from some record company for a best of release, that is pretty embarrassing to say the least in regards to the DP & PF covers. Cheers.

    Dr. Lao says:

Most Humble Uwe @ 23…..though I may have unlocked the door to the word prophyroPHOBIA, you are deserving of honours for discovering the word “porphyroPHILE”!!! And a fine word it is…so fine and so descriptive of the many denizens on these purple pages, that we now need to find a champion who will design a logo for it! We need an artiste!

    Uwe Hornung says:

Max @21, 😁😂🤣 I actually wanted to mention ‘Die Bärbel im Rock’ (they are from my neck of the woods) in my initital post, but then decided against it, too dificult for our non-German readers to explain.

But now that you have introduced the brilliantly monikered Juttas Brischt (I had to pronounce that aloud to get the reference to Judas Priest 😂), a band hitherto unknown to me, here we go:

    – ‘Die Bärbel im Rock’ means literally “Barb in a skirt”, but sloppily pronounced in a Southern Hesse dialect comes very close to ‘Deep Purple in Rock’. (A guy from school played with them for a while, incidentally one who was always extremely snotty about Blackmore’s abilities. I always thought that ample justice dealt, once the arrogant brat claiming non-sensical stuff like Billy Gibbons being superior to Ritchie, now relegated to a DP tribute band having to emulate him!) They are basically a side-project of another popular band from our region, namely the Rodgau Monotones.

    – ‘Juttas Brischt’, again a South German dialect, translates very loosely (no gravitational pun intended, I swear!) as, yes, “Judith’s tits”. So now you know. DON’T LOOK AT ME, MAX BROUGHT IT UP! Though a Priest fan since 1977, I tend to avoid tribute bands like the plague and had never heard of them.

    Uwe Hornung says:

Deep Purple (or their record companies) released some real howlers as covers, that cheapo space ship interior of ‘When We Rock, We Rock, And When We Roll, We, uhum, Roll” (dumbest and pretty much longest/ungainliest title for an album ever)

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_We_Rock,_We_Rock,_and_When_We_Roll,_We_Roll ,

the mock-James Bond bathing suit beauty for ‘Singles A’s and B’s’

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Deep_Purple_Singles_A%27s_and_B%27s ,

or the welder iron babe of ‘The Mark II Purple Singles’,

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mark_II_Purple_Singles ,

    all awful, throwaway stuff.

Still, it could have been (even) worse, that notorious Scorpions sleeve everybody likes to conveniently forget about today …

Why can’t people do tasteful covers like Tenacious D?!

Art you can get a grip on.

    MacGregor says:

That first Deep Purple ‘collection’ I have never seen before Uwe. It reminds me of the appalling Black Sabbath release, ‘we sold our soul for rock ‘n roll’. Where do they get these woeful sayings from. That is embarrassing indeed, the second & third DP collections were available out here. Now about that ‘slippery’ snake to get a grip on. The Tenacious D one. Comical, but at least to the point. Cheers.

  29. 29
    Uwe Hornung says:

“That first Deep Purple ‘collection’ I have never seen before Uwe.”

I’m surprised about that, it was quite popular in the US, any mega record store featured it. I always assume that the product world of the mighty US of A is somehow closer to you Oceanites than Europe, but that is perhaps a misconception of mine.

In that case you’ve never seen that one either, right? Also US:

    https://de.rarevinyl.com/cdn/shop/products/deep-purple-the-best-of-deep-purple-us-vinyl-lp-album-record-ctn18010-540627_1280x1299.jpg?v=1708943969

I had them all 🤣, I spent great parts of my adolescence scavenging through record shops all over the world (I should have spent more times with the fairer sex instead!) picking up anything with Deep Purple on it I could find. Anally-retentive compulsive collectivitis is a life-long companion, I just bought some obscure CD by a group aptly named “Come Taste The Band” that features Joe Lynn Turner on two tracks (the rest is sung by secon generation usual suspect Doogie White).

The 1985 Italy-only compilation ‘Fireworks’ had a decent cover (feline, not silly sexist), I was happy to add that that to my collection at the time:

    https://i.discogs.com/JAFhPu14-vP8jv7zPikMgsy1Ng6dnJRB63DV1DQ5ASo/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:600/w:600/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9SLTM0NTE2/NTYtMTQ0ODM2MjM4/NC01NTc3LmpwZWc.jpeg

    https://www.discogs.com/de/release/3451656-Deep-Purple-Fireworks

You’re tellin’ me that in all those decades there has never been an Australia-only DP compilation?! Holy wombat!

That ‘We Sold Our Soul For Rock’n’Roll’ sleeve by Sabbath with the SS runes was quite risque, I remember gulping when I saw it appear in shops in early 1976. Like a lot of Nazi insignia (swastika etc) the SS runes (whether in pairs or single) are forbidden in Germany – unless displayed serving a historical context. Kiss can’t even use this logo here in Germany

    https://static.posters.cz/image/750/56893.jpg ,

they had to create another one specifically for Germany and Austria:

    https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-3c8071241ad00af1aa14f41e03c53b06.webp

Today, that Sabbath compilation would immediately be confiscated, back then the album was allowed to disappear gradually from view – later reprints of the title would not reuse the rune lettering though. And so much the better, it’s a vile symbol.

    MacGregor says:

I have never noticed those other Deep Purple compilations either Uwe. Mind you my searching through record stores was limited to occasional visits to Sydney & my home towns record store. It was grand at my home store as my father ran the record department up till 1978. So when he was there we had access to records to play & have a listen etc. After 1978 is was buy only. Sydney import & second hand stores were the go for rarer records etc. The ‘mock James Bond bathing suit’ A + B singles album was everywhere though, even in Woolworths discount bins in our ‘outback’ home town. Cheers.
