Burning the states live
Glenn Hughes will embark on another US tour this September. He will be performing his Purple set, the tour is billed under the ‘Celebrating 50th anniversary of Burn‘ moniker. It will start on August 30 in San Juan Capistrano, CA, loop around the country in 16 dates, and finish back in California on September 28th, 2024. Chris Lafferty will provide support for the shows. Full details in our calendar.
I’m happy for him to do this and he never needs to play SOTW or HS in my book again, but I wished he’d mix up the set a little. I’d love to hear A 200 live with extended solos from the Dutchman and the Dane (and the boy from Cannock can rest his voice a little while channeling his inner Chris Squire with the bass runs he did on that track) or Holy Man, Gypsy, Love Don’t Mean A Thing, Hold on or This Time Around (he used to play that all the time, I miss him doing it). Any hitherto not performed track from Burn, Stormbringer or CTTB really. The people at his gigs in any case all know Burn and Stormbringer (as well as most likely CTTB) forwards and backwards, they will welcome any choice cut they haven’t heard live before (and will likely not hear again). I’d even be fine if he did Wild Dogs – who could do that more legitimately than him I cry? (BTW, the verse chords of Wild Dogs and Holy Man are identical, that saves rehearsal time!)
Anyway, Glenn’s current Mk III (+ a little IV) bonanza seems to improve his pension schemes quite a bit or he wouldn’t be extending it all the time. All power to him.
April 23rd, 2024 at 18:52I will see him play in Montclair, CA – front row
April 24th, 2024 at 06:47Looking forwartd to seeing him in a couple of days for the second time doing this set – it was a great night out first time around some years ago. But I sure would welcome some other tracks from those 3 albums as well … People attending these shows may see DP later in the year as and get their share of SOTW and HS anyway. So why not stick to Mark III/IV material here? Burn and Stormbringer should do as encores/crowd-pleasers.
April 24th, 2024 at 08:46Looking at the shows so far on this tour, HS seems to be out and SOTW was out but back for their latest show. Seems weird. Let’s hope the setlist.fm contributor got it wrong.
April 24th, 2024 at 08:52Not to be misunderstood: I don’t have issues with Glenn doing SOTW and/or HS (or Space Trucking or Lazy) – they were all at one point in Mk III or IV set lists, but he doesn’t have to do them because of me (well, SOTW maybe a little because for some reason I always liked the Mk III/IV versions of it even though they of course miss the autobiographic tie to those line ups).
April 24th, 2024 at 12:18No issues with Glenn doinmg them … it’s just that I could do without DP doing them as well. 😀 Dig out the deep tracks I say.
April 25th, 2024 at 07:35Wow! I can’t believe how quickly tickets are selling for a Sept. gig at the same place we saw him in February!! The word obviously got out what a great show it was, I would rather hear SOTW as the encore this time for sure.
April 26th, 2024 at 10:08Which venue would this be, Stoffer?
