Every night should be a last hurrah

Publicity blitz on the occasion of Machine Head remix continues with Roger Glover’s interview to Rolling Stone India.

What’s coming up for Deep Purple in 2024?

Well, a lot of people want to know, ‘When are you going to end? When are you going to finish?’ I know some bands do this, they say, ‘Right, this is gonna be the last concert.’ I just don’t want to do that, because there’s too much emotion involved. Too much pressure, too much stress.

I think the best thing to do is just play and play and play and then stop. The stop will come obviously from health or something like that and that’s life, but it’s a natural ending. It’s not an orchestrated last hurrah. Every night should be a last hurrah. Every gig should be, you imagine, it’s the last gig you’ll ever do. That’s how we think.

The guys must be asked about retirement so consistently that they reflexively respond accordingly, even when asked about what’s next, like a new album?

    Uwe Hornung says:

For the record, Roger: You are a good, very fluid bassist with an impeccable, smooth groove and a swift pick technique. You’ve recorded some of the most iconic Rickenbacker sounds of the 70ies. Stop knocking yourself!

The quote “And I’m not as good on my instrument as they are on theirs.” ist ab sofort verboten! ☝🧐🤜 I’ve heard how Mk VIII sounded when you had your knee surgery – it was a difference between night and day. Without you, Purple isn’t that chugging locomotive we all love. 🚂🚃🚃🚃

    No more fishing for compliments!

    Very well said !!!

    Long live Deep Purple !

Don Airey has finally found the fountain of youth …and grew his hair while searching for it obviously …

I love the RG remix that I don’t feel the need to have a third Machine Head

The interviewer should have ask about the “new album” instead. ☹

    Uwe Hornung says:

Listening to the 72 In Concert recording right now – it’s been a long, long time since I last did that – and it strikes me again as I hear Roger’s lovely bass on Strange Kind Of Woman: No one can play fast triplets in a shuffle as smooth and consistent as him, he always had a knack for that. He generates immense power with it, yet ever so subtly. When other bassists play triplets in a dotted note shuffle, they do it for drama for a few bars and if they persist too long with it, it becomes mechanical-sounding/rigid, but Roger goes on and on with it without getting in the way of anybody, he lays one fluffy triplets bed for all the band to rest upon. That is really difficult to do and neither Nick Simper nor Glenn Hughes – both no slouches as bassists – could have really copied it.

So that is another jewel in his crown. At 04:20.

PS: In the ‘In Concert’ performance of SOTW, Big Ian quips “Break a leg, Frank!” in the coda too.

@ 2 – Agreed. Rodger more than good on bass!
Know some aren’t crazy about Dancing In My Sleep- Whoosh.
Love that bass line – and always want to dance when awake when I hear it!

It also seems to me that their concert activity is coming to an end and I will try to get to their concerts twice this year, which is not easy for me, because they came to my country only once and that was 11 years ago.

    MacGregor says:

Thanks for that isolated bass & drum mix. What a drum sound that is & the bass guitar doesn’t sound too bad at all. Break a leg Dweezil. Cheers.

    Andrew says:

Just really hope they don’t do an AC/DC, Quo or Stones, limping on until the last member falls. Stop touring and recording completely when either IG, RG or IP stops.
