Tony Carey, J.R., and Formula 1
Tony Carey is back from his cancer woes and have started a new project with J.R. Blackmore. They have teamed up with a metal frau Ela and recorded a song called Silver Arrows (Racing On). The project is billed as EBC Racing Team and the song is dedicated to the 2010 re-entrance of the Mercedes-Benz into Formula 1 racing world (Silver Arrows — Silberpfeile — being the old nickname of the Mercedes-Benz racing cars). Music was written by J.R., while Tony wrote the lyrics and accomplished production duties.
In 2004 Tony had his first contact to the world of Formula One by performing at a charity event during the Grand Prix at the Nürburgring in Germany. He performed a solo set and later was together on stage with the band of Eddie Jordan (owner of a F1 team at the time) for David Bowie’s Heroes.

I only suggested what I believe would have been a good approach for OTR to have taken, while adhering to the subject. I am consistent in my view. I maintain a strong advocacy toward OTR producing something Real. I would love for TC to return to OTR and work on a Record. My JLT Bashing if that is what you wish to call it, only pertains to his Persona that he exudes to the extreme that it bothers most. I have a great deal of respect for his Talent. Not the same goes toward his persona. As the Front Man, he is of course going to be judged more than the rest regarding that. It goes with the territory. If you are the Spokesman and up front lead in an endeavor, you must expect to be sized from all directions….

March 5th, 2010 at 17:01I totally understand JR’s feeling about Formula One racing. It is much more theatrical and exciting than a lot of oval track competition. Those cars do scream as the drivers hammer through the ratios and the lyrics capture that imagery. Very well done.
What struck me was the phrasing during the guitar solo. JR sounds eerily like his father. He is not a clone–but there is a definite lineage there–a resemblance that comes through the slide and the high notes. The dynamics are very clear, just like the car approaching a turn, braking, then accelerating past the apex.

I would not think that this idea is something to be generalised.
I have a lot of criticism towards the man on the Lego guitar but thats about HIS PLAYING and NOT the way he dresses up.
I dont care about appearances as long the music is good.
I dont expect Gillan to look 30 years younger although I sympathise with people who thinks he should let grow it a bit longer.
I dont care Morse wearing the outfit a stereotypical neighbour does instead of the well dressed man In Black tends to do.

Priest, as I stated, the Persona is much more focused on the Frontman. His attitude and stage presence are as important as his singing. What he exudes on stage or during interviews is much more worthy toward the critical sense than let’s say, the Keyboard, drummer, bass or guitarist. Though each may have their own way on stage, the Frontman is who is watched and judged more based on their behavior.
Plus, I would have to differ with you in your statement about the music being good and the appearance being all you care about..
Too many times you have criticized Steve Morse for being too happy and Mr. Smiley Face. What has that got to do with his playing?????
JLT is arrogant on and off stage. He sings great. His singing takes a hit every time he speaks instead….

March 6th, 2010 at 18:14Everyone has an opinion on Joe Lynn Turner. Some may not like his stage presence; others argue he fronted the most successful Rainbow line-up ever. Some may not like his demeanor, others suggest his voice has held up better than most. I feel he made the best post-Classic era Purple album bar none. Some would never accept any singer other than Gillan on any Purple album.
All irrelevant.
The topic here is the song “Silver Arrows (Racing On)”. Turner is not related to this project. What did you think of the MUSIC?
The song has a great hook and it stuck in my head for a long time. As a car enthusiast (I have a 1LE Camaro, an Indy 500 Official Truck and a couple of convertibles), it’s something I really relate to. If one is going to make a stretch to Turner, I got a bit of “Death Alley Driver” feeling from it (“One-hundred twenty-five, smokin’ on the turns…”)
But what really knocked me out was the guitar playing, which I found very clean and quite reminiscent of JR’s dad. Like Blackmore the Elder, JR has a grip on the idea that sometimes it’s not about playing a zillion notes a bar (à la Malmsteen), but *holding* a note from time to time and letting the harmonic feedback do the work. Very tastefully done. I was impressed.
Sometimes, as they say, it’s the notes you DON’T play.
