More details on the Hughes super group

At the Guitar Center’s Drum-Off last weekend, Jason Bonham did a tribute to his father, the late John Bonham from Led Zeppelin. Glenn Hughes was Bonham’s guest at the show. In an interview before the show, Bonham talked about his new band featuring Joe Bonamassa and Glenn Hughes.

“I just literally went into the studio last week for two days with one person I’d done an album with before, very quickly, and then the other was a friend of my father’s I got to meet later on, Joe Bonamassa and Glenn Hughes, and we’re working on a new project with a working title of Black Country.”

“We just went in with [producer] Kevin Shirley and played riffs and just jammed for two days. And that’s really exciting.”

There has been rumours floating around about a keyboard player joining the group. For now at least, Bonham denies that.

“Joe just wanted to play guitar so with Glenn on bass and vocals, it’s a power trio.”

Interesting mix of styles. Three (four?) VERY talented musicians should make for some interesting music.

The triumphant return of Glenn Hughes to the world stage.

This would be a real power trio like Trapeze in the 70’s..

    Great musicians…

But Joe isn’t from ‘Black Country’, but who cares. Glenn will hopefully get some proper exposure for once, if that means America will finally be onto him then so be it, sometimes it takes the darndest things to make that happen, this looks like a significant attempt if thats what it is. I do think it will be internationally noticed at the very least, and if its really good, well… there is at least a snowball’s chance anyway. If Glenn isn’t after some sort of well deserved reckoning lately, then we sure haven’t noticed.

I’m a little disappointed that the group is a power trio and lacks a keyboard player.

I’m not a fan of the kind of keyboard that is merely string ensemble synthesizer; but an overdriven tonewheel sound gives a group a lot of power, a thicker sound, and when done right, a whole new dimension and expanded possibilities compared to non-keyboard set-ups.

I reserve judgement until the album comes out. Michael Schenker’s power trio worked very well. As a bona fide Glenn Hughes fan, this is exciting news.

“Derek Sherinian is super-versatile, and is playing mostly overdriven Hammond organ in this ensemble and is the color on the palette.” [Kevin Shirley]

There will never be a “Super Group” anymore. Those days are long gone. They will probably do one cd, do a small tour of some small european country, and they will be finished. Typical Glenn Hughes bull s***!!!!

    Chantal says:

Thank God, Glenn is back in rock again!
The album “FUNK” was just another “had to do” thing from Glenn.
Hopefully it will be a lot of blues and a bit of funk.
Something like “Come taste the band”

Glenn will always tell us his latest album is the real GH, but one has to find out themselves which gems there are hidden in his now large work.

I saw the Bonamassa clip from the Royal Albert Hall.
Thats the way a gig should be filmed!!!!
    Great stuff.

    How ironic.
Saw Bonamassa live in a club overhere some years ago.
Now it seems he has the jackpot of fame.
Maybe he can ask to do JLT some vocals as well. After all, he did work with him before……

It does not matter if you like my song, as long as you hear me sing
