Manny Charlton R.I.P.
The founding member of Nazareth guitarist Manuel “Manny” Charlton has passed away at the age of 80. Roger Glover writes:
Very sad to hear that Nazareth’s guitarist, Manny Charlton, has died.
I last met him about five years ago in Spain after losing touch for many years, and it was a lovely reunion. Nazareth played a huge part in my life in the 70’s. My thoughts go to his family and friends. He shall be missed.

Charlton was the guitar player for Nazareth from 1968 until 1990. After leaving Nazareth he continued a successful career, releasing 14 albums solo and with his own band.
Vale Manny Charlton. A fine guitarist & this clip says it all. Old school guitarist with a Stratocaster & a Marshall amp, say no more. Nazareth were a good band back in the 70’s & no doubt beyond that era also. I remember the Rampant album I used to own & a few other songs of theirs here & there. RIP

July 7th, 2022 at 07:27May he RIP! Rampant is one of my all time favorite albums!!
July 7th, 2022 at 08:46I loved his creamy Les Paul sound + great slide playing. And his look caught my attention because he resembled Jon Lord!
Sad news, razamanaz in peace …
You can hear him here (that idiosyncratic slide playing of his) on a song fitting the occasion, backing his singer on a solo outing from 1975 with 3/5 of the Alex Harvey Band and that one guy from DP on bass who always wore a hat … Manny also produced the track.

July 7th, 2022 at 18:47For me it was “Loud and Proud”. What a great album. Go Down Fighting and Not Faking It are 2 of my favorite Nazareth songs. RIP Manny.
July 8th, 2022 at 00:16Sad. Such a great musician. I’ll have to listen to my Close Enough for Rock ‘n’ Roll cassette that I bought in 1978.
July 8th, 2022 at 01:19It’s always sad to hear of yet another skillful musician passing. For me, perhaps more so as Nazareth were the support band for my very first Deep Purple concert at Newcastle City Hall on February 27th 1973 and I can remember nearly every single second of both sets. Manny in knee high boots and hat mesmerising with his slide interpretation of Vigilante Man still sends shivers as did their whole performance and they were allowed an encore. Purple weren’t bad either!
July 8th, 2022 at 13:15I will be listening to Naz and his solo stuff in his honour and even the cringingly named Fluffy Jackets album he illuminated.
Rest in Peace Manny, you made a lot of people very happy.
RIP Manny!!!!!
Got to see him and Nazareth open for MK4 PURPLE in Miami. Incredible show. One of MK4’s best gigs and Nazareth was at the top of their game. A standout concert that to this day pops up in my head in full visual and audio….
