And last, but not least, Classic Rock has a short feature on how it all started — the original 1968 Purple’s version of Hush. It is published in their March 2022 issue as a part of the Rock’s Greatest Cover Versions series.

Thanks to Yvonne for the heads up.

Green Bullfrog, one of only 3 covers albums I own, a mighty effort from all concerned. The 2nd album being Steve Howe’s Portraits of Bob Dylan, a wonderful album with so many different lead vocalists, which is the key to a successful covers album in many ways.
The 3rd album & some here may need to sit down & get ready for this, Willie Nelson’s Stardust. Yes Willie Nelson. It is a very good album of many old American favourites, I really like it. Plus Willie is a cool dude if ever there was one. Now it is time for a nice cup of tea everyone. Cheers.

The Classic Rock article also covers Rainbow’s Since You’ve Been Gone and Whitesnake’s Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City.

UK Rock and Metal Magazine did a re-evaluation of Green Bullfrog back in October last year – https://ramzine.co.uk/features/classics-features/ramzine-classic-green-bullfrog-reaches-its-50-and-30-year-anniversary/ It is shorter but says pretty much the same thing and has a video piece embedded with some hazy but nice stills from the sessions set to ‘My Baby Left Me’

MacGregor @1, I also have the Willie Nelson “Stardust” CD, and it is indeed very good – an enjoyable listen when I’m in the mood. Willie is a good distance from Purple musically, but they each have their own charms.

I have ‘Green Bullfrog’ on cassette. A real gem, in my view, with great blues vocals and instrumentation.

George @ 6 – yes indeed when in the mood I really enjoy it . It has that old school song feel & it also reminds me of my upbringing as my father managed a record store & was also a radio announcer back then, so it is a nostalgia trip in so many ways. Plus Willie & the band nail it in regards to complimenting the songs so well. I thought there would have to be a fan or two here in Purple land. Thanks for the response. Cheers.

In regards to Green Bullfrog which I have been listening to again & enjoying immensely.
I wonder about Blackmore & his loathing of soul & funk. He would have heard plenty throughout the 60’s & here he is amongst it on this recording. And then along came Glenn Hughes a few years later, we have to laugh don’t we. Green Bullfrog would probably be almost unavailable these days it seems, a rare wonderful recording capturing a brief moment in time. It is certainly the best rock ‘ roll covers album I have ever heard. Cheers.

I really like the Green Bullfrog album. I got the 1980 reissue after Blackmore leaked that he was on it and named a few of the others. But even then half of the musicians were not yet credited.

Has there ever been anything like it where a bunch of well known musicians jam and release a record, but they keep the identities of all the musician secret (for years) for contractual reasons?

@MacGregor @George – I like that one too. Willie Nelson ist one of a kind. And I can see no reason to stick to just one kind of music. As Jon Lord put it: Music ist a house with many rooms. You can easily walk from one room into another … Always thought it was sad that so many people here put albums dwon just because they don’t contain riff driven hard rock. Malice in Wonderland, Snapshot, Play me out, Northwinds, Clear Air Turblence for instance have always been some of my favourites … Cheers.
