Not in Kansas anymore
Steve Morse has been spotted among the musicians on the first solo album of violin player and a fellow Kansas alumnus Robby Steinhardt (albeit they never were in the band at the same time). The album is naturally called Not in Kansas Anymore and is touted as a prog opera. This Steinhardt’s solo outing also proved out to be his last, as he died in July this year of acute pancreatitis, which apparently delayed the release until now.
Besides Steve and Steinhardt himself, musicians in the cast include Bobby Kimball on vocals; Ian Anderson on flute; Patrick Moraz and Chuck Leavell on keyboards; Rick Derringer, Pat Travers and Les Dudek on guitars; Billy Cobham on drums, and many, many others.

October 29th, 2021 at 23:13Robbie Steinhardt, bless him. A dedicated & talented musician & a very modest fellow. I was reading about this album recently, he was a wonderful violinist & a very good vocalist also. For any Kansas fans here who may not already know of this release, check out the superb live concert ‘Device Voice Drum’. Filmed in a small setting about 20 years ago, all the epic classics performed by that once great progressive lineup, albeit minus Kerry Livgren.
October 30th, 2021 at 09:27Regarding Morse & his stint in Kansas, it is strange in a certain way that they did not have a violin player while Morse was there. He would have played those melody lines on the guitar in a live setting I presume. I should see if I can track down any live material from that short lived lineup. Cheers.

It is interesting though, that one of the guests, Bobby Kimball, released an album with the same title some years ago.

November 8th, 2021 at 10:30I was on the lighting crew on that tour, called “in the spirit of things” yes steve played some of the violin lines,
and steve walsh played a lot of them on synth.
Steve Morse did “appear” to play the solo on Dust In The Wind, but I could never confirm with anyone if he was actually playing or miming to Walshes Keys.
Kerry even played a few songs with us in Atlanta, Where he was living at the time.
@ 4 & 5 – thanks for the information regarding that Kansas era performing live. I have always wondered what they did about the violin or lack of it situation. Cheers.
November 8th, 2021 at 21:25I saw the tour for the ‘Power’ album. As someone mentioned…violin parts were covered by both Morse and Walsh during this period. They were no worse for wear during this period,being pro enough to know how to cover the lack of violin. This and they catered their sets a bit to ease any obvious material with alot of violin segments. You have to keep in mind, Steve was already familiar with covering occasional violin parts when he would play songs in his solo band live from his time in The Dregs.
