Concerto in Győr
Roger Glover will take part in the performance of Jon Lord’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra to take pace in Győr, Hungary on November 5th, 2021. Paul Mann will be on board conducting the Győr Symphony Orchestra, and Bruce Dickinson will do the vocal duties. Other musicians include Kaitner Z Doka on guitar and Bernhard Welz on drums. Both have collaborated with various members of the Purple family over the years, including Jon himself. There is no word yet who will play the organ.
Tickets go on sale next week, check our calendar for more info (when available).
[Update Aug 29]: The venue for this show has been changed from Egyetemi Csarnok to Audi Aréna.

God, I wish I could go. I heard the Concerto live in Quebec in November of 2019 right before the pandemic. Hearing it live after listening to recordings for 50 years was truly a spiritual experience – what an evening! Paul Mann and Bruce Dickinson did the Quebec performance, but being able to hear them do it again live with Roger Glover and Bernhard Welz would be the icing on the cake. I was lucky enough to meet Paul, uncle Colin Hart, and Bernhard at the Quebec airport afterwards and they all were incredibly friendly, warm people. Bernhard was telling me some great memories of his time with Jon. If you can go to hear it, it is totally worth it. Let’s see…my passport is still valid…

I have always greatly admired MK1 Purple from day one when originally introduced to In Rock, Fireball etc. Seeing those ‘other’ DP albums in my older cousins record collection had me wondering, what are these albums? Being raised as a youngster we were lucky in the musical sense that our father was a music aficionado & a radio announcer who also managed a record store, a wonderful insight into various music it was. Being exposed to this earlier DP was no problem as Classical music was often heard being played in our house along with other styles of music.
July 28th, 2021 at 00:40In regards to Rod Evans being an exceptional vocalist, I could hear where Ian Gillan was influenced by Evans. I have always heard a lot of Evans in Gillan. Thankfully Evans didn’t over do it with any screaming like Gillan did at times, as great as that Gillan power vocal seemed back in our younger hard rocking days. Ivica’s post & link at 3 has sent me down that time tunnel again, wonderful music. Cheers

Those two CB releases with him are timeless jewels. They rank among my favorite DP-spin off-albums.
With Purple, Rod Evans always sounded 60ish, a bit behind the times even in 1968/69. With those Yanks from CB – essentially the remnants of Iron Butterfly – his voice was suddenly perfect and aligned with

Wow that first Captain Beyond track is a different Rod Evans vocal. The second track sounds like more him, I agree he is more out there as a lead vocalist, feels more confident perhaps & playing in a band that suits him more no doubt! These live clips & he is singing deeper, more bluesy, hard to imagine it is him in some ways.

I have always been aware of who they were as a band, but to be honest I didn’t ever spend too much time listening to them over the decades. They sound great live. For a second I thought that was John Du Cann on guitar, from Atomic Rooster ‘Death Walks Behind You’ era. Same era indeed, Iron Butterfly. What two better names could you have for those bands. Heavy names for heavy music, classic. Cheers
July 29th, 2021 at 03:45Further on the Rod Evans theme. In Australia, Hush was backed with Kentucky Women as a single which I bought and still have some 53 years later. It was a great introduction to Mk I DP. Unfortunately I always got the impression that Mk II DP (probably their management) preferred to distance themselves from MK I which was a shame since on closer listening to those early albums you can hear the band progressing, growing into what most casual fans know as the “best” version of DP.
