Jon Lord jam with Deep Purple in Tokyo – and Yngwie too
Last night, on April 15, Deep Purple were joined onstage by original keyboard player Jon Lord and Swedish speed shredder Yngwie Malmsteen at the International Forum in Tokyo.
Jon Lord played two songs with the band – Perfect Strangers and Smoke On The Water. Yngwie Malmsteen only guested on Smoke.
This marks the third time Jon Lord has guested with the band since leaving in 2002 – the first was Wembley in 2004 and then the Sunflower Jam in London last September. (This photo is not from Tokyo.)

Right, Yngwie should likely be getting up with them again, but I bet Jon being there made it all the more significant for him.

Well put. I was shocked to see this. He is the only six stringer out there who put Sir Steve down (an envious dude who cannot hold Sir Steve’s pick in his hand, but just an opinion with my driest of light hearted humor). Do the math now. Mr. Genius, leave my ego at the door, humble musician, is fine with letting him up on the same stage to play with his favorite band he only wish he could be a permanent part of.
But dare I digress. Maybe Yngster will come around….? :>

April 16th, 2009 at 15:35A lot of people dont like Malmsteen, and yes he can be a bit “tooo much” sometimes, but still he is great on guitar and a great showman, and I miss that part of Purple these days.
Now I just want to see some video from the show.
I tend to agree with Arik. It really surprises me they invited (the big headed egomaniac) malmsteen on the stage with them. Has he ever made anything original, musicwise? Never heard of. But then again, it’s just rock’n’roll. There are all kinds of banjo players trying to get all the attention they possibly can get, and to enhance their low prestige in the eyes of rock audience.
April 16th, 2009 at 15:51I´ve met the man, Yngwie that is and yes…..he´s a major a**hole! Despite this fact, he sure can play a half decent solo or two when he puts his mind to it!
For Yngwie to share the stage with DP, probably is one of few occassions when he´s humble, considering singing their praise for years! ROCK ON!
April 16th, 2009 at 20:38It did not take long for the comments to turn nasty again, Why did Arik have to say Yngwie is a xxxx xx xxxx. i am not a fan of his at all but at least he plays on the world stage, do any of the rest of us do that. have you seen the 3Gs DVD where Yngwie is onstage with Via and satriani, he ripped them to pieces because he could improvise better than them. i agree with CG in 10 that i thought the site was being moderated, maybe next time? the best thing about this site is the sharing of views on purple and new info from people who know what they are taking about, it would be great if that could be continued.

April 17th, 2009 at 03:01Wow Jon Lord on Stage With Purple, now that must have been some show. Now on to Malmsteen; a very arrogant player, who in my opinion is not that terrific. He is a virtuoso by all means but he gets boring to listen to. There is a reason when he was begging to join Deep Purple that he was declined. What a show it would have been if Ritchie had joined them instead of the mosnter he created-Yngwie. No matter, the king of the Hamond was there and added the 1 of the two missing ingridients to the Deep Purple pot. Mr. Airey, take a seat, class is in session. Greeting form Moscow 😀

April 17th, 2009 at 08:16Despite yngwies ego, he is still a world class guitar player who IS taken seriously as a soloist by most rock guitarists. He and Bruce Dickinson are also the only high level rock stars who actually sing Purples praises in their interviews and keep the respect alive for DP. Every other “rock star” just goes on about Zeppelin and Sabbath…We should be grateful for the respect shown by these Rock heroes. I also think it is innapropriate to use that language here Alrik…very adolescent…where are the regulators now??
April 17th, 2009 at 08:17I think it’s great that Purple allow guests from time to time….no matter who they are. It’s very classy of Steve and Don to share the limelight with other respected players of their caliber. Malmsteen may be an arrogant bastard, but when he disciplines himself (hardly ever) he actually has some good depth in his playing. I think any time any past Purple player wishes to partake in joining the present Real Purple as a guest shot it would be quite cool and well received….
Hope this one makes it to CD or Vid eventually.
Oh, and is everyone going to be walking on eggshells now and constantly reminding the Moderators or Moderate? Kind of reminds me of the tattle tales in grade school……”Teacher, teacher….guest what Johnny did…..”. Seems a little wimpy coming from a Rock site….but, hey what do I know…

April 17th, 2009 at 15:09Such a shame taking the air bus to Japan is that costly. David Rosenthal helped Yngwie out when making the Guitar concerto and why not some further collaboration with keyholders from the DP family?
PS It was often stated that Mozart gave us too many notes and that Beethoven in person was pure pain. Being a genius is rarely easy in the eyes of the world. DS
