Oh how I wish they would play this song live! There are so many great, great songs that get ignored. Just once I wish I could make the set list.
March 5th, 2021 at 21:40Honestly, didn’t think much of the video. In fact, I watched about 10 seconds before changing my screen to something else. I did leave the music blasting in the background though.
Was this song always so good? Maybe it’s time to give HoBL some spins…
March 5th, 2021 at 22:04Thanks for that, really enjoyed it early morning on. The House of Blue Light, what a delightful album it is, the only post 70’s Purple album that inspires me, brilliant. Cheers.
March 5th, 2021 at 22:15I love the visuals, that artsy Russian cartoon style reminds me of Eastern Bloc children’s cartoons I saw in the 60ies which always had a certain look to them.
The DP track is great too – like everything from THOBL which I consider to be among DP’s most adventurous albums together with Fireball und Purpendicular. That album really cries for a reissue.
March 5th, 2021 at 22:57Big Song for a great album.
March 5th, 2021 at 23:11Love forever.
@1 George Martin ‘Mad Dog’ was played at least once on the HOBL Tour. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQ6KORteVSU
March 7th, 2021 at 11:54@2 SAME!! couldn’t take the video, but went on to play THOBL in its entirety….underrated LP!
March 7th, 2021 at 12:34I’m glad to see that THOBL sees some reappreciation – at the time of its release I thought it far stronger than Perfect Strangers which had been welcome – hell, after 11 years any sort of Mk II output would have been lapped up by me -, but was Purple kind of treading safe (perhaps understandably so after such a long time apart). On THOBL nearly every track was somehow different and interesting, for Purple standards it was almost intellectual.
The long versions that came out with only the CD at the time have TO THIS DAY (34 years later) not been remastered once! No band of similar stature has been so ill-served with remasters and new stereo remixes – it drives me mad. I look at the lavish boxed releases Esoteric Records have meanwhile done with each and every Be-Bop Deluxe studio album from the 70ies in comparison. Now I love me my BBD (and it’s reassuring that Bill Nelson loves Purple’s Machine Head though he himself consciously eschewed the guitar hero role laid out for him by his talent), but compared to DP they are an obscure (albeit criminally underrated) act.
March 7th, 2021 at 20:23@ george martin (and @6)
They played it once, at the beggining of the tour, in Portland. “Mad dog in Portland” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQ6KORteVSU
March 7th, 2021 at 21:32Oops!
March 7th, 2021 at 21:37It’s the same one. Zorry John M. (from John to john :))
Perfect Strangers is over rated in my book & other Purple fans I knew back then also said so. When we heard THOBL, all seemed well. Well maybe not in the band as the old feud had most probably re surfaced by then. As they say, a bit of tension can create much more spark & sparks usually lead to fire, something like that. Blackmore’s solos are superb on Blue Light, extended jamming on a few songs also, the songs are much stronger, they were not resting on their laurels, which is what the Perfect Strangers album sounds like to me, except a few classics on that album of course. We need a remix & remaster of THOBL. Cheers.
March 8th, 2021 at 08:04MacGregor, are you yet married?!
March 8th, 2021 at 13:20Uwe, Never & I have managed to negotiate the paths of life that I have journeyed upon, free from the shackles of restraint. Also, I could never wear a suit at any ceremony or wedding or anywhere else.
March 8th, 2021 at 22:01If I can just get through this life without ever wearing a suit, I feel I would have actually achieved something at least. Ha Ha. What is that Jimi Hendrix line ‘hey mr business man, you ain’t never gonna dress like me’. Something along those lines. Cheers.
Regarding my suit rave, not that I have anything against good people wearing a suit at all. I just would not feel comfortable wearing one myself. Cheers.
March 8th, 2021 at 22:14But you wouldn’t have to wear a suit! Agreeing with me on THOBL suffices perfectly.
March 9th, 2021 at 02:22Ah, the old ‘but we do agree on certain things’ trick eh? And how long does that last, he, he! Cheers.
March 9th, 2021 at 20:39@MacGregor, when he asked if you are yet married, are you sure you understood Uwe’s intentions…?
March 10th, 2021 at 05:07Could of sworn I just heard JPY singing “Love is in the air”!. 🥰🥳😁😆😅😂🤣
Oops!.
@MacGregor… by the way, how’s that sense of humour?! 😈

Sir Blackwood – See what suits do to people, I was right, Ha Ha! Thanks for that, a laugh first thing in the morn with a coffee, Cheers.
However I am a little concerned that Uwe may be trying to turn the Highway Star site into one of those so called ‘dating sites’ though. He, He. Remember that Blackadder episode when Baron Von Richthofen says to Baldrick ‘if you get lonely in the night I am in the old Chateau, there’s no pressure’!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlWhswW2fEA
Classic. Cheers.
March 10th, 2021 at 20:53@MacGregor… & then a little later on in the Baron’s dreams…

Props to Ade Edmondson!. 🥳
March 10th, 2021 at 22:27I’ll bet he loves Deep Purple too…
Sir Blackwood – I am not sure about Ade’s musical tastes, if he is a Purple fan or not, however I do prefer him playing guitar. Crooning, even with the improv mid section, doesn’t suit him, & he was wearing one. Sorry, I had to throw that pun in. Cheers
March 11th, 2021 at 20:01My intentions are always saintly.
March 12th, 2021 at 04:17I’d go as far as to say that I’m as judas as almost priestly!

March 12th, 2021 at 04:24@23 Uwe, your piggy two song reminds me of some old fun from years ago…

March 12th, 2021 at 22:12Enjoy!. 🐖
I am still not sure about this Uwe character. Is he an angel that will sing me to my eternal rest, or an angel that fell from the sky. The jury is still out, he he he! Cheers.
March 13th, 2021 at 23:01@MacGregor, our distinguished literary blogging companion Uwe, is a gentleman & a scholar & a good family man with Germanic idiosyncrasies & sensibilities. He is a dilettante & has a wonderful sense of humour!.
I know how Aussie blokes love to take the piss out out of practically anyone, & will shit test anyone who is the slightest bit different… (especially their sexual preferences: E.g.- Is he a bloody poofter, or what?!).
I’ve given Uwe a bit of a go, & I reckon he’s a good sport. He knows more than I & many others do in regards to all things related to Deep Purple. Of course that is all aside from his long & respectable legal career.
I’m not shy to say that I envy him!.
Uwe’s as big as a truck & fast as a door… What a guy!.
This is dedicated to Uwe & MacGregor:

🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
Sir Blackwood – it is all good Sir, those sort of ‘Aussie blokes’ are the typical yobbo, a species I despise.
March 14th, 2021 at 09:34If you knew how much I have deliberately stayed clear of them this past 50 odd years. I am rather embarrassed at being Aussie in many ways, because I am surrounded by them wherever I go & in my younger days was up against it in many ways trying to be ‘different’, but thankfully their not ALL like the proverbial yob. I am more European in influence & mind, love it, associate with people from that side of the world & a few Australians that are that way influenced as well. That is where the comedy hails from as you would have guessed. And comedy it is as well as music, art, history & literature etc. Thanks for the Deep Purple song, I have never heard that. A tip of the hat to you. Cheers
Though this little gem above (@26, B Richmore) was offered to Uwe and McGregor I listened to it and it really made me think.
So here is my petition to the band and Bob Ezrin: if they ever make their 22nd studio album they should close it with this song.
Not only a fantastic little tune but also fits their recently acquired habit of closing with a cover. And seriously what else to close with?
March 14th, 2021 at 11:15Would also fit perfectly Ian Gillan’s musical inclinations I suppose.
@27 & 28… Surely you know the story of how that old song ‘Deep Purple’ was a favourite of RB’s Grandmother?!. That’s why he named the band Deep Purple way back in the late 1960’s.
https://www.thehighwaystar.com/rosas/faq/name.htm
The Peter DeRose tune goes back to the early 1930’s, & the lyrics were added a few years later by Mitchell Parish.

*MacGregor, I can’t just google your name & pick up the most basic info about you, as is the case with a certain renowned lawyer. However, you present in these blogs as a decent & thoughtful sort of fellow, & you share my taste in good solid rock music & British comedy.
I like the way you think, old mate! 🤠
I like the final words of the song ‘Deep Purple’ as it runs out…
March 15th, 2021 at 13:10….. We’ll always meet, here in my Deep Purple dreams!. ☔☮️♾️
