Nothing at All

Another single — Nothing at All — from the upcoming Deep Purple album Whoosh was released today, July 10.

Caveat: the clip appears as ‘unavailable’ in some countries. Don’t blame us, blame the poster.

The single even got a mention in a publication that did their best to ignore the band for the last 40 years.

Thanks to Jim Collins for the press link.

Sounds too much prog,it reminds Genesis but I would DP..
    Where is gone rockNroll?

  4. 4
    Ottar Pettersen says:

The guitar melody sounds A bit like The Outlaws, Law and Order, with Ritchie on guitar..

    ARTEMIS V. says:

the first 3 songs that we have heard from WHOOSH are progressive but soft for DEEP PURPLE…I Know they are over 70 and i dont expect a SPEED KING…i will love the new album anyway…i am a big fan of DP…its a huge part of my life…i cant wait any more for 7 August….

This is my kind of Purple !
In the style of All The Time…. & A Touch Away.
Lots of Hammond. Good guitar/organ interplay.Nice solos all round.
    Gillan’s comfortably within his range.
Best Whoosh tune yet, to my ears.

    Nina Maage says:

    I love the song 😍

  8. 8
    Uwe Hornung says:

Hey, it’s cute and poppy, love it! As a man who loved the pop/Beatles-influences on Who Do We Think We Are, I’m very pleased.

This is Purple not taking themselves too seriously, being loose und having a ball. What’s not to like?

Steve’s and Don’s riffing und soloing is very tongue-in-cheek, like minuet dancing.

  9. 9
    Chris Parsons says:

    Blabbermouth has it.

  10. 10
    Felix Gauloises says:

Jagdeep Singh you missed nothing 😉

    Love this song!

My mom passed away yesterday, and this gem….hit the spot.

    DeeperPurps says:

A light song from Purple – some of the instrumental passages are quite nice. Interesting that RollingStone has fallen off its high horse and deigned to notice Purple after all these decades. Could it be that RollingStone itself has become irrelevant in these modern times; and shorn of its habitual arrogance, has decided to ground itself in real music once again?

  13. 13
    Felix Gauloises says:

    Wow thats annoying….😔

  14. 14
    Ian Low says:

Jagdeep Singh You’re lucky. I heard it ☹.

  15. 15
    Felix Gauloises says:

Ian Low light pink instead of deep purple 🤣

  16. 16
    FrankW says:

Thank You Deep Purple! The music and vocal are sounding nice and worth of listening.-The band is great and the tune is musically interesting! But please, dear Deep Purple!Would you mind to stop saving the world so much in your songwriting, it is very difficult task for the real professional experts too. Of course You can do anything you want.-But please, we do already have problems in our everyday life! Put some rock and roll and positive vibes going on little more too!

    Peter J says:

Fantastic song, just like the 3 others.

    Airey REALLY is a phenomenon

  18. 18
    Rock Voorne says:

    Ian is sitting again.

Soundwise I have heard worse, though Morse still plays the same solo.

    Like what Don did.

But it all seems to drag along a lot.

    Man, I m tired….

  19. 19
    john says:

@ jagdeep singh, dunno today, but yest I searched the song in youtube and voila! no problem. I already left my first impresion there, but since now it’s here too… From 2:50 to 4:00, Don and Steve play like kids, having fun and, also, doing a great job. Don reminds me of ELP. I’ve listened to the song four times now, each one liking it more than the prevuios one. Fresh sound, no repeating themselves, a thing that’s definitively different from whatever else. Could be “anyting different from everything else”, ha-ha. Love it a lot. Patiently and eagerly waiting for the album.

    I thaaaaaaaaaaank- you!

  20. 20
    Mark Nolde says:

its possible to listen to it overhere. It drags along a lot but hey….its bedtime anyway. NO REASON TO GET EXCITED. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLV4_xaYynY

  21. 21
    Xavier Gomez says:

well crafted song in unmistakable 24 Carat Purple mould. this track makes up for my disappointment for the earlier two. Jon would have loved it, and Don makes every Purple fan glad again

  22. 22
    No One Came says:

Unfortunately, this is very pure tune. Can’t relate it to Purple at all. I am afraid that the new record will be a total failure. Hopefully I am wrong.

  23. 23
    Blackwood Richmore says:

Nothing At All sounds like a hymn. The church of Deep Purple?. I love it!. 🔊 👍👌✌
    ❤💙💚💛💜💖 😎

  24. 24
    Giorgi says:

I’m very surprised by the old, the original Deep Purple listeners who are still waitting from the band now to prove they’re “fast & furious”. They don’t need to prove this anymore, they already influenced the wide array of fast, hard&heavy genres long time ago. At that time, half a century ago they just felt it like this, it was natural and I think that’s why it worked.

I’m more than happy that Deep Purple, as a music entity, with the input of Bob, achieved this state of complexity and confidence, when they professionally combined all their pivotal features to create the music which can be described as thoughtful and beautiful.

Nothing At All is a very good example of how a music band can mature with such a high sense of dignity. Thanks to whoever contributed to maintaining Deep Purple such confident. I’m glad that they’re following their own thoughts. That’s what creates the strength and sets the examples.

  25. 25
    Bob Worm says:

Hmmm. It is a nice poppy kind of song with interesting noodles of music, but again, where is the growl, the bite, the omph. Is there no roar left in the beast ?!

  26. 26
    Craig Storey says:

Me likey! Very progressive, and almost back to the egg, so to speak.

  27. 27
    Ben Elshout says:

This might be the first time I won’t be buying a new Purple album. And I say that as a longterm fan. I heard nothing exciting yet. I really miss that sense of adventure like Purpendicular had.

  28. 28
    Adel Faragalla says:

It’s nothing at all😭😭😭 the track title sums its up.
Maybe I am negative but where is the fun and energy that I am getting from the last 3 tracks released from Whoosh so far.
Maybe I need to buy a set of hearing aid for my ears.

  29. 29
    Johan Antonides says:

Nice tune. Don reminds me of Rick van der Linden from Ekseption and Trace. A lot of Bach influence ? This song can be listen on Spotify

  30. 30
    stoffer says:

Very Nice! I like all 3 so far….it’s not In Rock, Machine Head or Perpendicular, It’s DP in 2020!? what’s not to like?

  31. 31
    James Gemmell says:

Morse sounds great the beginning of the tune, and Airey fantastic at the end. Very melodic. It’s a simple song to drum to, but Paice sounds crisp – really adds to the texture. Gillan’s voice is predictably melodic and solid in the mid-range, but it’s sad he doesn’t have the ability to hit the high notes or inject more energy into it. He would’ve blistered singing that tune 40 years ago. I realize he’s turning 75 in August, so kudos for having the passion to still perform.

    al says:

I don’t think the vocals fit with music overall, don’t know, its hard to get thoese juices going with the song in general.Like every one is saying here,is very soft and some great interaction with Organ-guitar but something is lacking

  34. 34
    Micke says:

A sunny nice spring day in the park! Love it!

  35. 35
    Felix Gauloises says:

I quit one album before…Roadhouse blues was my overkill…purpendicular was fresh, abandon was damn great, bananas amazing summer soundtrack witj a bad mix, rapture was boring just “before time began” is damn good! Now what and infinite are soft pop rock from my point of view…..and as you said uöits getting even worse

  36. 36
    Scott McNay says:

Wonderful song. Not impressed with the first two singles, but this one is superb.

Jon would be pleased with the work Don has done. I love that DP keeps changing and growing.

    Long goodbye indeed.

  37. 37
    Ted The Mechanic says:

    Kim @11,

My heartfelt condolences and prayers for your loss.

    Giorgi @24,

Spot on! I listen to hard rock, progressive (big time), jazz, classical, country, bluegrass etcetera. As long as they don’t delve into disco, hip hop and rap (which is not music in any way shape or form. It’s noise which numbs the brain), I’ll continue to dig it. Picture taking a UFO album off and following it with Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. Just sayin’…. :>

    Peace,
    Ted :>

  38. 38
    Micke says:

    @ 24 Amen to that!

  39. 39
    Enan Quinn says:

Love all three cuts off the new album so far. We DP fans are unbelievably fortunate that our band has evolved over five decades to still be making exciting new music today. I have been with this band since the beginning. I could never have imagined that I would be listening to their new music after 52 years! How lucky can we be? To the fans still stuck in the past…Do you really think DP should still be making music that sounds like Hard Lovin’ Man? That was then, today is now. It is because of their virtuosity, progressive spirit, and courage to embrace change and adjust that we are still graced with their presence today. Looking forward to Whoosh in its entirely in just a few weeks. (By the way, Ian Gillan’s One Eye to Morocco is the perfect summer album.)

    God bless your mum,Kim.

  41. 41
    mike whiteley says:

i’ve been singing the chorus and humming the riff……in my head and out loud, pretty much all day. That’s a very good sign.
Far more memorable than either Throw My Bones or Man Alive.
So far as it being “proggy”……Nothing At All just sounds like a fun folk song to me. Which suits me just fine !

  42. 42
    Blackwood Richmore says:

Does anyone remember that sweet song called “Never A Word” from the Bananas album?. Seems like a similar feeling to me…. like slightly reminiscent of Buckley’s Hallelujah!.

  44. 44
    Shannon Wann says:

Ben Elshout agree. I’ll still probably buy it but Ezrin’s production has diminished their sound.

  45. 45
    Philip burton says:

Having been a fan of this band since I sent my dad out for a mud album and he came back with come taste the band. I had never heard of deep purple before that. So I took album out put it on the fidelity ua4 and from the first bar of coming home I was hooked. Now all these years later another new album. I love the new tunes the evolution of this band is staggering. Steve Morse is the man for me being a guitar player myself blackmore can’t lick his boots for technical ability. Steve saved this band from oblivion and we should all be grateful.

  46. 46
    Geno says:

The 3 songs we have from the new album give the group an evolution of their own history. It is a top group, perhaps the only one that did what they wanted and gave us that great pleasure to enjoy them. I am surprised by opinions that ask for more aggressive rock, I am surprised that the groups that do that are for obvious reasons, (they don’t know how to do anything else and that’s how it goes). Deep purple always made evolutionary music, always

  47. 47
    Kim Peters says:

    Ted @37
    Thanks.

  48. 48
    Buttockss says:

@ 39, Born Again from Black Sabbath, is the perfect summer album for 2020. @ 24 Agree, just listen to Pupendicular, that album had so many music personalities on it, and the songs just flowed beautifully!

  49. 49
    davedp says:

You know I feel so sorry for the people who have never listened to DP because they don’t know anything about music. But for the people who have known DP for 50 years and say the band is not playing good music now, or are whining that it’s not DP without RB and it’s not rock music or progressive, when they listen to his 300 year old stuff. Well I feel even sorrier for them.
Can’t wait for the next new album after Whoosh.

  50. 50
    mike whiteley says:

    OK.
After reading the lyrics @ Caramba ,they have a pretty dark tone. Folk songs can be dark,of course..
It’s still a fun, upbeat instrumental track.

  51. 51
    George says:

One more thing to add to my 24th comment above – as someone put it perfectly on DP’s official Facebook page – Deep Purple has always been an avant-garde band, call it an avant-garde rock, an avant-garde progressive rock, whatever you want… Whoever knows the wide definition of this term, would agree to that point.

I’m not only happy, but very thankful to Deep Purple that the thing they’re really following is only their own mindset, taste, thoughts, instincts and their own true self – that’s an example to be appreciated.

  52. 52
    AndreA says:

    @49
davedp you should speak about these 3 songs not about people does not like that songs.

  53. 53
    Rock Voorne says:

    @ 39

    Eyes of Morocco

I experience the albums of recent years as a mix of what the members did/do as solo artists.

As Jon Lord once said Blackmore was the key to the Deep Purple sound.

  54. 54
    davedp says:

    AndreA

    @52

Love all three new songs AnderA. I’m A little fed up of people trying to put DPs new music down because RB is not in the band anymore. If it wasn’t for the likes of DP, and there are precious few of those, I’d have stopped listening to music a long time ago. I certainly wouldn’t be listening to Blackmoresknight. So if my earlier comments upset you there is nothing I can do about it. I only said what I think and maybe you should refrain from telling people what they should or shouldn’t say.

  55. 55
    Robert Brodman says:

    @24
Giorgi, I am enjoying the irony of you trying to explain how the band has matured to the most mature DP fans. For those of use who grew up in the 70s listening to hard rock & prog rock I don’t think that DP sounding like Genesis or ELP has anything to do with maturing. It’s better explained by Don & Steve taking over the creative force of the last 3 albums and expressing themselves by going back to their prog rock roots. Not my favoirite sound. I’d prefer a more blues or metal direction. But the band pulls off prog rock pretty well.

  56. 56
    Blackwood Richmore says:

    @everyone else posting comments here,
you say it best… when you say Nothing At All!.
    🙈🙉🙊 💜 👍 😎

  57. 57
    Attila says:

I hated it first. A few listens later, not bad at all.

  58. 58
    Marcus says:

This is getting better every time I listen but I think this could be epic on stage.
Are you just not impatiently waiting to here Steve and Don go at this with time and space to jam and the crowd cheering them on.
