Coverdale offers advice to Jimmy Page
David Coverdale has offered his advice to Jimmy Page on how he thinks the Plant-less incarnation of Led Zeppelin should work. He thinks that a number of different singers should perform with the band instead of just one:
My suggestion to him when I saw him in the summer was to do what Carlos Santana did with ‘Supernatural’. Get a selection of people in, because there’s no question John Paul Jones writes f*****g kick-ass music. I said Joe Elliott and me would come in and do a track rather than the focus be on one person.
Will people be willing to see three-quarters of the family with a guest — a cousin twice removed? I’m as curious as anyone to see how it works out… Change is good as long as you f*****g deliver. I hope it comes together for him because, Jesus, he deserves it.
Rrright. Get a bunch of primadonna singers instead of just one who bailed out of the project. I wonder how this might work out…

If Plant decides to jump ship they can´t call themselves Led Zeppelin, and Page is very much aware of that. They can barely get away with it as it is without Bonham….But without Plant,no F**king way!! I would never accept it, and I don´t think the majority of Zep fans would!
Here´s a thought…..Why don´t he give Glenn Hughes a call, he sure could sing any Zep song, and in the right key as well I might add! Hey, I even got the name for them…..”Houses Of The Holy”!!!! Nuff said!

Why not leave Led Zep fans with the good memories they have of the band when they quit at the top? Why should Robert Plant be interested in a reunion?
In my opinion Coverdale’s voice isn’t what it used to be, which isn’t surprising having performed for thirty-odd years as he has. I think I read somewhere that he’s had throat surgery but in any case a man’s voice drops in pitch as he gets older, so those screaming high notes get harder every year. It’s different for drummers, keyboard players and guitarists, they can grind-on until they drop….and many do. For vocalists it’s very different and there’s nothing sadder than watching a has-been croak his way through the oldies just for the money or the ego-trip.
I’m not surprised Robert Plant isn’t interested in reforming Led Zep. It could undo their reputation forever. Leave well alone I say.

December 29th, 2008 at 13:09Well, to be honest I dont really give a hoot, wether Led Zep reforms of not, IMHO they where allways just a garage band compared to DP (Any incarnation!), and Jimmy Page was never really a guitar god. Sure he can play, but nothing special really. DC, well he might be over his prime, but the new album is great.
When should a singer pack it in? I dont really know. I have really enjoyed the last couple of Deep Purpel concerts, but it’s still a far cry from the great concerts here in Copenhagen in 1970, 71 and 72 when Ian Gillan was at his absolute peak. David Coverdale was great, and is great on the last album, much like Ian Gillan on Rapture. Concerts is a whole different ballgame though.
I felt very sad when leaving the DP concert this august. It had been a fantastic experience for me and my 15 year old son. He saw “The Legends” for the first time and loved every minute. Me, well I felt like crying cause for me this looked very much like the last time I’d see DP in concert.
Age is such a strange thing, for I’m sure Ian Gillan and David Coverdale feels like young boys inside, just like I do (at 49.), but the body says something different. Should they go on? As long as they feel comfortable with what they do, yeah, sure! As a fan I have to know when I book my ticket for a DP or WS concert that what I will see is not a 1972 or 1982 show, but a 2009 show with my aged idols, and that I don’t expect miracles!
If I get the chance I will be at the 2009 shows, as I still love these guys, no matter what I have chosen to take the ride with them!

Nobody here disagrees the DC had his heyday. He Was and in many respects still is a Great singer and of course Frontman. Yes, his performance with C/P was to say the least ‘Magnificent. I have some live shows from that era and still enjoy them. Actually those were the days when he became known as David ‘Coverversion’. Not only did he do the Zep songs well, he allowed it to creep into his own music. But, That Was Then. This is Now. All Zep songs if performed as Plant did it would totally tax his vocal cords. He can barely do the Whitesnake material. Trying to pull off Zep tunes as he did with C/P is out of the question in his present vocal status. Which is why he needs to revamp his view on things and address it like a professional, thereby dropping the ‘Whaling’ and go back to singing the tunes that fit his present voice capabilities.

Since there is presently a lot of focus on Coverdale and Whitesnake presently on the THS ‘Blogs’, I thought this would be a good addition.

It seems that the remainder of the band are determined to go ahead and pursue a venture of sorts without him. Rumor has it that there will be a search for a replacement front man and even possibly an album with various singers as with Iommi and Santana’s past mixed bag offerings.
Here is Coverdale’s view and ‘Offering’ of advice to the effort. I find it rather ironic when his own band is showing signs of present decline from the ‘Frontman’s Age and Performance Ability’. Yet he seems to be eluding to entertaining the idea of taking part in this……..
David, please note what your second to last sentence states here at the bottom. You need to look hard at yourself these days before you make a remark like that…..and Practice what you Preach…

December 29th, 2008 at 18:30First of all I have NEVER seen Led Zeppelin as a great band. Like Black Sabbath always lightyears behind Deep Purple. Sabbath with Dio was great (the first time they where together!!) I have all Led Zeppelin CD/LPs but I might find 10 track in total which I find OK, the rest – forget it!!
December 29th, 2008 at 20:22Deep Purple with and without Blackmore is great. Not all the music is superior but most of it is just first class. For David Coverdale I think he should take some time to find out what to do now. Just seen a few David Coverdale with band (called Whitesnake 🙁 ) He is NOT able these days to sing the way he want. Get back to the Deep Purple Mrk III or the real Whitesnake sound, and I’m sure he could get back as the first class singer he once was. And foreget Led Zeppelin.
Actually, if they need a singer, there’s this one guy who sings in a virtual band called “Virtual Zeppelin” who is a master Plant impersonator. His voice is uncanny and frankly, he sings a hell of a lot better than Plant can at this time. Check out this YouTube vid and see what I mean. Screw all the old guys – this guy is the “real thing”.

He does not have to take Plant’s left overs. I feel Coverdale is a much better front man, however i am in the monority who thinks JLT DP album was top notched.

Although when he picked up the guitar and tried his hand to jam with Ritchie he did get that Ritchie look. That said, I agree the album had that R-Bow sound, but it was their best album since their reunion. Make no mistake, I am a huge Gillian fan, but that JLT purple album was a nice piece. We all have opinions and hiney holes so that is my take.

December 31st, 2008 at 13:26Purple is made up of different line-ups through out their history and managed to make each album sound different than the previous. No other bands have done that. All the other so called “great bands” fed off their same 2-3 classic tunes, if and when they did reform for reunion tours. JLT is part of the DP family and gave it a twist, ala R-bow, but better than most. Did I miss something with the JLT bashing—how dare he speak of his DP experience without the sugar coating.

According to U.K.’s Daily Mail, Robert Plant has topped a poll of the greatest voices in rock organized by digital radio station Planet Rock.
The “might be another subjective poll” called ‘The Greatest Voice in Rock Top 40’, was compiled by the station’s DJs, presenters and listeners, plus musicians, rock critics and experts like Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath, Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music and Ian Anderson from Yes. I’m surprised that Ian Anderson didn’t make his place in this Top 40, altough he is very great singer.
For me, this poll almost make sense. But Plant should not be in the first place. I think it’s very funny Coverdale and (who??)Jagger were there in the top ten. Who is Neil Young and Gabriel, they should not be there IMO. Jagger and Gabriel were great frontman, not voice! And where is Eddie Vedder and Paul MacCartney?? Eventually yesss, Gillan and Rodgers in the top five. Please comment.

June 17th, 2013 at 09:20Personally, I love all the music, can care less about the awards. I saw Richie with Rainbow, first time with Dio. Great show, but by all accounts, he is hard to get along with. That has been said about many others. The Eagles comes to mind, or Pink Flyod. Human nature.
