Coverdale offers advice to Jimmy Page
David Coverdale has offered his advice to Jimmy Page on how he thinks the Plant-less incarnation of Led Zeppelin should work. He thinks that a number of different singers should perform with the band instead of just one:
My suggestion to him when I saw him in the summer was to do what Carlos Santana did with ‘Supernatural’. Get a selection of people in, because there’s no question John Paul Jones writes f*****g kick-ass music. I said Joe Elliott and me would come in and do a track rather than the focus be on one person.
Will people be willing to see three-quarters of the family with a guest — a cousin twice removed? I’m as curious as anyone to see how it works out… Change is good as long as you f*****g deliver. I hope it comes together for him because, Jesus, he deserves it.
Rrright. Get a bunch of primadonna singers instead of just one who bailed out of the project. I wonder how this might work out…
Thanks to Tracy Heyder and Planet Rock for the info.
There is a clip of the entire press conference, I thought it was here at THS, but I could be wrong? (I was thinking of a new handle and calling myself “Coverdale’s Belly” pun intended of course, I’d never do such a thing and most would agree. but…. lolololol!
December 28th, 2008 at 01:33Why the reformed Led Zeppelin should add singers in their shows I can’t understand it…fans are waiting for Plant Page Jones…
December 28th, 2008 at 14:11Change is good as long as you f*****g deliver?
December 28th, 2008 at 14:38Maybe a good idea to take is own advice?
I agree with all the above, Mr. Coverversion should pipe down and worry about his own bloated ego!!! How that guy ever made it I’ll never know (perhaps a bit of help from d.p.)… 🙂
December 28th, 2008 at 16:45Piet!
My thought exactly!!! The days when D.C. delivered is over and I´m afraid it´s a permanent condition!
If Plant decides to jump ship they can´t call themselves Led Zeppelin, and Page is very much aware of that. They can barely get away with it as it is without Bonham….But without Plant,no F**king way!! I would never accept it, and I don´t think the majority of Zep fans would!
Here´s a thought…..Why don´t he give Glenn Hughes a call, he sure could sing any Zep song, and in the right key as well I might add! Hey, I even got the name for them…..”Houses Of The Holy”!!!! Nuff said!
December 28th, 2008 at 16:55– I don´t think Coverdale is able to sing any Zeppelin song, whatsoever!
He is a cock ´n´ roll singer. And a great one.-
But Zeppelin materiale is way out of hs league.
December 28th, 2008 at 17:36Desperate people and desperate behaviour
There s a time and place for everything
They should have accepted Cozy Powell as a drummer way back in 1980 as a replacement!
December 28th, 2008 at 18:15Dear Purplepriest: The zep thing was on the way down in ’80 regardless Bonham’s left, they made very good decision when split.
Stefan: You are right, but Glenn is some classes higher than Jimmy, and sure he won’t accept any offer…he learned his lesson in Sabbath days
December 28th, 2008 at 20:30Hans you have to check the bootlegs of the Covredale Page tour and you will listen that He sings Led Zeppelin songs even better than Plant himslef…so please don’t judge if you don’t know…
December 28th, 2008 at 22:53Zepplin is over, at least the physical entity.
December 29th, 2008 at 00:44There is no LZ w/o Plant, it’s as simple as that.
If JP wants to go out and play LZ material (like he did with The Black Crowes), go for it but, don’t call it LZ!!
How many times will Coverdale clame that he’s a fully stupid man??? Ok, he has a huge ego, but does he reserve it? 😀
December 29th, 2008 at 08:37He tries everything to be fucking popular, Ohh, c’mon David, you’re not in the prime-league of vocalists to play with Led Zeppelin… Just know what you’re capable of and then do ONLY what you can… and don’t do what you can’t….
Why not leave Led Zep fans with the good memories they have of the band when they quit at the top? Why should Robert Plant be interested in a reunion?
In my opinion Coverdale’s voice isn’t what it used to be, which isn’t surprising having performed for thirty-odd years as he has. I think I read somewhere that he’s had throat surgery but in any case a man’s voice drops in pitch as he gets older, so those screaming high notes get harder every year. It’s different for drummers, keyboard players and guitarists, they can grind-on until they drop….and many do. For vocalists it’s very different and there’s nothing sadder than watching a has-been croak his way through the oldies just for the money or the ego-trip.
I’m not surprised Robert Plant isn’t interested in reforming Led Zep. It could undo their reputation forever. Leave well alone I say.
December 29th, 2008 at 11:12Dennis Hanna I totally agree…but in the past Coverdale sounded better even on Led Zeppelin tunes than Plant…listen to believe
December 29th, 2008 at 13:09Well, to be honest I dont really give a hoot, wether Led Zep reforms of not, IMHO they where allways just a garage band compared to DP (Any incarnation!), and Jimmy Page was never really a guitar god. Sure he can play, but nothing special really. DC, well he might be over his prime, but the new album is great.
When should a singer pack it in? I dont really know. I have really enjoyed the last couple of Deep Purpel concerts, but it’s still a far cry from the great concerts here in Copenhagen in 1970, 71 and 72 when Ian Gillan was at his absolute peak. David Coverdale was great, and is great on the last album, much like Ian Gillan on Rapture. Concerts is a whole different ballgame though.
I felt very sad when leaving the DP concert this august. It had been a fantastic experience for me and my 15 year old son. He saw “The Legends” for the first time and loved every minute. Me, well I felt like crying cause for me this looked very much like the last time I’d see DP in concert.
Age is such a strange thing, for I’m sure Ian Gillan and David Coverdale feels like young boys inside, just like I do (at 49.), but the body says something different. Should they go on? As long as they feel comfortable with what they do, yeah, sure! As a fan I have to know when I book my ticket for a DP or WS concert that what I will see is not a 1972 or 1982 show, but a 2009 show with my aged idols, and that I don’t expect miracles!
If I get the chance I will be at the 2009 shows, as I still love these guys, no matter what I have chosen to take the ride with them!
December 29th, 2008 at 14:33Moderators, just disregard the prior message I sent, I’ll send it with the proper e-mail….
December 29th, 2008 at 18:29Roberto, Roberto, Roberto……Your dementia is stuck on one note…..
Nobody here disagrees the DC had his heyday. He Was and in many respects still is a Great singer and of course Frontman. Yes, his performance with C/P was to say the least ‘Magnificent. I have some live shows from that era and still enjoy them. Actually those were the days when he became known as David ‘Coverversion’. Not only did he do the Zep songs well, he allowed it to creep into his own music. But, That Was Then. This is Now. All Zep songs if performed as Plant did it would totally tax his vocal cords. He can barely do the Whitesnake material. Trying to pull off Zep tunes as he did with C/P is out of the question in his present vocal status. Which is why he needs to revamp his view on things and address it like a professional, thereby dropping the ‘Whaling’ and go back to singing the tunes that fit his present voice capabilities.
Anyway, below is the actual letter I sent THS which they edited for whatever reason before posting it…..
Read On:
Dear THS,
Since there is presently a lot of focus on Coverdale and Whitesnake presently on the THS ‘Blogs’, I thought this would be a good addition.
There are a couple of ‘News Articles’ on the “Planet Rock” Website regarding Coverdale and Led Zeppelin that I feel need to be brought into THS for discussion….
Robert Plant makes no bones about being ‘Self Realizing’ that he just isn’t up to doing the ‘Led Zeppelin Reunion Tour’.
http://www.planetrock.com/231208-4.html
It seems that the remainder of the band are determined to go ahead and pursue a venture of sorts without him. Rumor has it that there will be a search for a replacement front man and even possibly an album with various singers as with Iommi and Santana’s past mixed bag offerings.
Here is Coverdale’s view and ‘Offering’ of advice to the effort. I find it rather ironic when his own band is showing signs of present decline from the ‘Frontman’s Age and Performance Ability’. Yet he seems to be eluding to entertaining the idea of taking part in this……..
David, please note what your second to last sentence states here at the bottom. You need to look hard at yourself these days before you make a remark like that…..and Practice what you Preach…

There you have it……

December 29th, 2008 at 18:30First of all I have NEVER seen Led Zeppelin as a great band. Like Black Sabbath always lightyears behind Deep Purple. Sabbath with Dio was great (the first time they where together!!) I have all Led Zeppelin CD/LPs but I might find 10 track in total which I find OK, the rest – forget it!!
December 29th, 2008 at 20:22Deep Purple with and without Blackmore is great. Not all the music is superior but most of it is just first class. For David Coverdale I think he should take some time to find out what to do now. Just seen a few David Coverdale with band (called Whitesnake 🙁 ) He is NOT able these days to sing the way he want. Get back to the Deep Purple Mrk III or the real Whitesnake sound, and I’m sure he could get back as the first class singer he once was. And foreget Led Zeppelin.
Actually, if they need a singer, there’s this one guy who sings in a virtual band called “Virtual Zeppelin” who is a master Plant impersonator. His voice is uncanny and frankly, he sings a hell of a lot better than Plant can at this time. Check out this YouTube vid and see what I mean. Screw all the old guys – this guy is the “real thing”.

December 30th, 2008 at 02:01I would rather see a Village People re-union tour. No offense–this group made 2-3 good songs. Over rated in my book. Rainbow reunion interests me alot more. thanks but no thanks.
December 30th, 2008 at 11:50Tracy
December 30th, 2008 at 12:10why you offend?
I totally disagree with your attitude (‘Bad Attitude’) and remember that you are not the king of this blog…
“Village Purple” lol!
December 30th, 2008 at 15:18Here We Go Again…….hmmmm sounds like a familiar song..
Offend? Who? I don’t see anything offensive that I wrote, unless you are referring to driving home a point regarding Coverdale’s present voice situation. King?…..hmmmm. I didn’t know there were such Royalty Positions held on this blog. How does one get Crowned King? And, if that’s the case, with your sensitive personality and thin skin, I guess that makes you the ‘Princess’….’Princes Roberta’…..I like it..LOL.
Relax Roberto, don’t take every little word to heart. You really need to lighten up and read between the lines a little better. Also just pay attention to the Whole Message….you seem to have a little trouble separating the Tongue and Cheek from the actual message. No Offence intended. Seriously…
Cheers
December 30th, 2008 at 16:18ok Tracy demented Heyder…
December 30th, 2008 at 19:00deep village—much better than Dead Zep—like i stated earlier, Zep made 2-3 good tunes–the rest is wishy-washy at best. Coverdale should stick with his own band. He does not have to take Plant’s left overs. I feel Coverdale is a much better front man, however i am in the monority who thinks JLT DP album was top notched.
December 30th, 2008 at 20:19james jay, you are so right about JLTs DP album. A great album.
December 30th, 2008 at 21:32James Jay!
It was a DP album by name only…..We all know that in reality it was a nice little album by “Rainbow” and not DP!
December 31st, 2008 at 03:37jlt a good pop singer thats it rock give me a break..the guys the biggest pansey going
December 31st, 2008 at 08:39I saw JLT in Phila with R-Bow back in the day and he was a great entertainer and singer. Although when he picked up the guitar and tried his hand to jam with Ritchie he did get that Ritchie look. That said, I agree the album had that R-Bow sound, but it was their best album since their reunion. Make no mistake, I am a huge Gillian fan, but that JLT purple album was a nice piece. We all have opinions and hiney holes so that is my take.
December 31st, 2008 at 12:40slaves and masters is a good album but not exceptional, I prefer much more the album Turner did with Rainbow…
December 31st, 2008 at 13:26Purple is made up of different line-ups through out their history and managed to make each album sound different than the previous. No other bands have done that. All the other so called “great bands” fed off their same 2-3 classic tunes, if and when they did reform for reunion tours. JLT is part of the DP family and gave it a twist, ala R-bow, but better than most. Did I miss something with the JLT bashing—how dare he speak of his DP experience without the sugar coating.
December 31st, 2008 at 15:03A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL FABULOUS PURPLE PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD…..YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE,STAND UP PROUD I SALUTE YOU ALL!!!

January 1st, 2009 at 01:33For all of you :
A lovely happy healthy New Year…lots of love, fun, music, booze and luck 😉
Also strenght to you and your family Sami !
January 1st, 2009 at 19:13I would rather see a Deep Purple MK3 reunion than a Led Zep reunion….AND I would rather see a “original” Rainbow reunion (can you spell DIO) than a Led Zep reunion….
January 1st, 2009 at 23:49I think Plant is no more a good singer…like Gillan, he lost his voice. Compared to 66 years old Ronnie James Dio, now these singers are nothingness.
January 2nd, 2009 at 12:52Coverdale is right – Zep needs Dio, Tony Martin, Glenn Huges and Coverdale
January 3rd, 2009 at 14:59I am sorry to hear of your loss Sami. Be well!
January 3rd, 2009 at 16:35So guys, this news below might not be suitable with our truly comments here above. Let’s see…
According to U.K.’s Daily Mail, Robert Plant has topped a poll of the greatest voices in rock organized by digital radio station Planet Rock.
The “might be another subjective poll” called ‘The Greatest Voice in Rock Top 40’, was compiled by the station’s DJs, presenters and listeners, plus musicians, rock critics and experts like Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath, Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music and Ian Anderson from Yes. I’m surprised that Ian Anderson didn’t make his place in this Top 40, altough he is very great singer.
For me, this poll almost make sense. But Plant should not be in the first place. I think it’s very funny Coverdale and (who??)Jagger were there in the top ten. Who is Neil Young and Gabriel, they should not be there IMO. Jagger and Gabriel were great frontman, not voice! And where is Eddie Vedder and Paul MacCartney?? Eventually yesss, Gillan and Rodgers in the top five. Please comment.

January 4th, 2009 at 02:21Jon Anderson is from Yes
that is not planet rock list but plant rock list…
that list is ridicolous:james hetfield and axl rose above ronnie james dio, bono above glenn hughes , paul rodgers (very overrated) above ian gillan…and where are dan mccafferty and mark farner, jhon lawton and daavid byron, jhon fogerty?
david gilmour, neil young and david bowie on that list…
these are stupid lists…
Plant stinks and he’s way past his prime. Why is everyone still talking about him? This is thehighwaystar.com!!!
And the remaining members of Led Zeppelin will never sound the way they did in the seventies. We’ll just have to be satisfied with the vintage stuff they release on DVD like the concert at Royal Albert Hall in 1970.
I wish Deep Purple had filmed their concerts in Japan in 1972. I would camp out overnight to be the first in line to buy the DVD!
January 4th, 2009 at 04:32I d walk to Scherpenheuvel and put a candle at Mother Mary s
January 4th, 2009 at 18:30Oh..
what a sadness…
the only most important thing is that R.Plant shall not be a DP singer in future…gh gh gh
ciao
January 5th, 2009 at 08:58😉
You know, I don’t care if Page calls the band “$h!t” he just needs to get John Paul and get out there and tour with a new record!
:-/
January 6th, 2009 at 01:14Can you replace the singer of a band and still achieve success? Dunno
DP tried it with varying success…….apart from the JLT fiasco that is……
Maybe Zep can do it……….
Hold on……….Why doesnt JLT have a go….It wouldnt last (nothing he ever does lasts), but he could at least add Zep songs to his ‘Tribute Act’…….
I bet Tony Iommi is running a fucking mile!! Although a JLT version of ‘Fairies wear Boots’ may seem quite apt……
JLT could, in the next five or so, have starred in, stolen, and ‘fucked-up’ all the ‘Classic Rock’ tracks the world has ever known.
What a depressing thought……….Shit
I just hope Jimmy Page and the boys have more sense…………
January 6th, 2009 at 13:46Hopefully more sense than we here on board blabbering on and on
January 6th, 2009 at 21:54Call Lenny Wolf.

January 7th, 2009 at 14:22Then we both should shut up, mate.
January 7th, 2009 at 21:44I’m listening……….

January 8th, 2009 at 04:03Tolerance is a great trait to contain, but so is the ability to shut up.
January 8th, 2009 at 09:37I agree
January 9th, 2009 at 00:06WE THREE AGREE……Very Scarey……and it all ryhmes…..

January 12th, 2009 at 16:47The only good in pretending is the fun we get out of fooling ourselves that we fool somebody
January 12th, 2009 at 17:14if led zeppelin is a crap garbage band why did they won all of their fucking awards………….
jimmy page OBE
Robert plant CBE
Grammy live award achievement
polar awards from the king of Sweden
why didn’t the fuck deep purple won any high class awards like that
don’t tell me that the queen of England or the king of Sweden were strung on dope or mentally retarded when the decided to give this awards to zeppelin or they bought it hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
people don’t get me wrong
i adore deep purple and i think that it is criminally underrated as for the awards
but sorry…….
zeppelin deserves every single award they won
jimmy is a very skilled man really
want a proof that i am not a retarded
watch earl court 1970 and page/plant 1995
and jimmy in his yard birds days
deep purple is great
zeppelin is great
sabbath is great
ac dc is great
rush is great
metallica and many more and we should not turn a band to the ground because you love another one and you hate that one
i believe that Ritchie blackmore is a genius
but
it doesn’t matter because he was full of hatred and bad temper and jealousy
that turned a lot of backs to him and he was one of the reasons that dp was not awarded as zeppelin
his temper…..
please don’t be zeppelin haters to the limit that you say that jimmy page is crap and worth nothing
he had his fare share of hard and bad times
so did Ritchie in 1993 when he broke guitars and was burnt out and left stages
please people
READ THE HISTORY BOOK RIGHT!
NUFF SAID
February 12th, 2009 at 00:37All this hatred to Zeppelin is hilarious given that the direction they took with In Rock was a directly influenced by the first Zeppelin album.
June 17th, 2013 at 09:20Personally, I love all the music, can care less about the awards. I saw Richie with Rainbow, first time with Dio. Great show, but by all accounts, he is hard to get along with. That has been said about many others. The Eagles comes to mind, or Pink Flyod. Human nature.
