Smoke on the Wiltern
Deep Purple live at The Wiltern (Los Angeles, USA 2019-09-04)
Finally a headlining tour for the US so no shorter co-headlining sets. Actually got 85 minutes start to finish!!! (90 if you count how long it takes Roger to toss all the guitar picks and wave goodnight. Love that guy!) No offense to “Joyous Wolf” but it was nice to have them on and off in 30 minutes. Short and sweet.
So with a headline and smaller theater setting, more hardcore DP fans than recent US tours and more knowledgeable love for the band. In the five decades the four of us have seen DP, it was a nice treat to get our first “Demon’s Eye”. Up front in the set and after the three pronged Highway – Pictures – Bloodsucker intro, Demon’s kicked the appreciative crowd into a higher gear.
After Demon’s Eye, Lazy and Smoke were highlights as Don and Steve were on fire and the crowd singing really on top of the Lake Geneva shoreline…
Its been a bonus to see the Boys four times in two years. You always hope there’s one more chance out there but thank goodness for the video capability of the smart phone.
To end the evening the usual head shaker. As the crowd queues up for the restroom prior to leaving, there was *the*guy. We’ve all seen *the* guy. He’s at every Deep Purple concert in different forms. In all seriousness – “I’m so pissed they didn’t play Burn!”. A testament to the song and the ability of the band to continue to draw the fringe!
So many years down, so many shows, scores of albums, the band has been a common thread thru the friendship the four of us attending the shows have had since high school.
To sum it all up:
“You’ve been great, superb, magnifique, we love you, take it easy, bye bye”
(No matter what we get out of this, I know we’ll never forget…)

absolument sans aucun intérêt que des reprises de la période glorieuse avec “le maitre” Ritchie Blakmore!
October 31st, 2019 at 20:49You must be well pissed to think Ian Gillan will sing or allow the boys on stags to play Burn. What planet did that guy come down from?
November 1st, 2019 at 07:46I love how some silly comments makes me laugh so much. It’s the new form of the killing joke. Peace and constant laughter to you all.
so their set is now only 85 minutes?? not what I would have expected..
November 1st, 2019 at 11:47Such a pleasure to have them still going on!! Thank you for that review!
And did you notice there’s always “the guy” who writes irrelevants things in the comments about a review and who’s not even able to get the name of the guy he calls “the master” right?
November 1st, 2019 at 12:22I can agree on the title but what does that the hell got to do with this great band, 26 years after the MIB left? Move on, buddy!
I have said it before and will again. I would love the current line up to acknowledge MK III -IV in some way. I know how IG feels, but he could be resting his voice out back while it happens. That being said…….
I forget which concert video it is, and it has been a while since I have seen it, but it must be early in the Morse era. During a jam SM plays the Burn riff real quick. IG shoots him a “burning” look and SM has a little chuckle.
Anyone out there know which one I am talking about?
November 1st, 2019 at 19:20I believe the Burn riff was played during Speed King on the 1996 Montreux show. It’s great to have people come to the shows, but sometimes it baffles me; last year a guy comes up and asks me “Is Ritchie Blackmore going to be here tonight?”
November 2nd, 2019 at 21:13@6 (and a million more) Well, Francis, you’ve made your point a thousand times already, I’m sure we all appreciate it. Please use your english, not everyone is fluent in your native tongue, and please can you crawl back to there you came from? Merci beaucoup!
November 3rd, 2019 at 09:45Hello Friends! Brilliant review! Btw, What a coincidence, I was sitting next to “that guy” at the Nyc gig! I thought it was hilarious. Crazy right?
November 4th, 2019 at 23:58@8 – Totally agree
November 5th, 2019 at 19:41@6 – DP ended in 1969 by the way you look at the band…Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose….
