Writing session in progress
Purpendicular, the tribute band Paicey have been touring with, have posted the following on their Facebook yesterday, February 18 (emphasis ours):
+++IAN PAICE/PURPENDICULAR COMPLETE SECOND LEG OF SUCCESSFUL EUROPEAN TOUR+++
The band now take a couple of weeks break while Ian is writing with Deep Purple.
This tour has been regarded the best by promoters, fans and Ian himself.
Thanks to all fans who came out to see the shows.
The tour will continue in Germany Bensheim next month. Do not miss this!
This means that Deep Purple are writing new material right about now. Various members of the band will resume their solo touring activities in early March — Don Airey on March 7, and Ian Paice on March 12. Gillan starts his tour on February 27, but he usually joins the writing later, once backing tracks are already developed.

Let’s hope so! I wish for a longer,heavier one.The last one “Infinite” was good but too short,Now What ?! much more completed and not fillers at all.Bob Ezrin involvement will great for good quality.

I don’t buy it. Something smells wrong here. They repeatedly said they were retiring. I wish it was true they are rehearsing, but I can’t believe it. If it’s true they are doing it, it’s great. But then again, if it’s a lie, I don’t know who or why someones are telling it. Not nice (and I hope it doesn’t turn out they release some easy material, an album of covers or things like that…)

This will be one of their most important albums for 2 reasons… Probably their last and it embarks on the fact that it is after 50 years of PURPLE. Whatever they put down on this album, it will be historical and I am sure it will be AWESOME!!!! Thank you guys for answering the call from your fans and going out with a BANG. I know you are doing this mainly for the fans and wish to deliver not only a Long Farewell Tour but also some new music for us to enjoy along the way and beyond…. CheerZ!!!!!!

Probably best to watch their latest DVD for that. Looked to me like Ian in Mike Airey’s photo. And btw, the images are back up at his Instagram, so they are in fact for public consumption on that platform and that is not limited to his Instagram network, the URL is publicly accessible. Not sure what the confusion could even be.

Indeed! But I don’t want any fillers like covers of old songs.I didn’t like Roadhouse Blues included in the album.Paradise Bar was much more deserving to be in the album then The Doors Cover.I want a long album this time around,hoping for heavier and some good epics!! but this is just my imagination and wishes! lol
February 22nd, 2019 at 15:17@10 Sorry, but Ezrin is so key to enabling the band to write and produce something of great quality. The prog influence is more than likely down to Don. Bananas and Rapture were badly produced and the whole thing very rushed. Bob coaxes out great performances that help inspire the band to write better. I’m sure they’ll be calling in Bob, and no doubt he’ll want to do it. Plus, they’ve so enjoyed the whole process with Bob that they might no want to do another album without him at the helm. I just hope the album is a bit longer that Infinite, and no covers at all. This is terrific news!
February 26th, 2019 at 13:11As a fan I appreciate all the good vibes here when DP announced that there’ll be a new album. Terrific news, I don’t know. As a musician my feelings are strongly mixed. Is it still part of their natural flow to play hard rock? If I watch Gillan perform I rather get the impression that all of this is one big struggle for him.

March 8th, 2019 at 23:06I’m really excited by this news too,but not at all surprised.I didn’t believe a word of this ‘long goodbye’ stuff,it’s a gimmick to draw people in,they’ll go on for years yet!I do hope it’s much better than the last album though.It was far too short and there was no need for the cover track.Only 4 tracks are really worthy of Deep Purple’s greatness on the album,it’s the only Purple album i’ve been disappointed with.Let’s have a longer,heavier album this time.I won’t say i hope they go out with a bang,because this won’t be their last album!
March 10th, 2019 at 11:24Purple always had a prog rock strain in them – that was the reason why the prog rock crowd would still grudgingly accept Deep Purple as ok (also for the improvisational capabilities of Jon, Ritchie and Ian P), but laugh off bands like, say, Uriah Heep or Black Sabbath. Fireball IS a prog rock album. Ian Gillan has prog rock influences too because he avoids doing the obvious in his vocal melodies and lyrics. If Clear Air Turbulence and Scarabus aren’t prog rock, then I don’t know what is. Even Gillan (the band) had a prog rock slant (via Colin Towns’ playing and writing) and the vocal melodies on Born Again (the song) are pure prog.
When Blackmore left (whose music tastes grew more conservative/simplisitc and uncompromising over the years, Gates of Babylon was probably the last prog rock track he played on), Steve already brought a new prog rock influence with him – what are the Dixie Dregs and Kansas if not prog rock bands? The way Steve writes and plays – there is always prog school in him. That influence was amplified when Don replaced Jon – I mean the man played in Colosseum II (and loved being in that band)!!!
In essence, DP have for a long time already been a prog rock band that in a live setting play their old hard rock hits. Every album from the Morse/Lord and from the Morse/Airey era is proggish – that’s not a bad thing in my book and it also befits the evolution of the band. In the absence of Blackmore (in his youngish years), there is no angry young man left in their ranks that can really project hard rock credibly. Jon Lord was never a hard rock writer at all, Roger Glover only to a limited extent.
Plus: Prog rock ages better than hard rock does because it is brains over brawn. That is why Kiss have to call it a day and Ian Anderson or David Gilmour don’t.
Finally, Bob Ezrin can do prog rock productions (Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel), but doesn’t have to, unless you call Alice Cooper, Kiss and Hanoi Rocks prog rock (early Cooper actually was). If he is known for one thing, then for a certain lavish, operatic production style (plus bringing in the odd children’s choir!), but that is IMHO exactly what he has not done with/to Deep Purple, he has retained their core live sound and not drowned them in a grand “Ezrin Wall of Sound” type production he is appreciated (or, alternatively, notorious) for. The man is actually versatile. In fact, his two DP productions are probably among the most “unezrinized” he has done. All credit to him, he has still made DP sound better.
March 14th, 2019 at 20:05Looks like I am in the minority, but I really like the Roadhouse blues cover , its a great groove, Also have to say Pete @27 I wasn’t at all disappointed with Infinite, a tad short I would agree , but at this stage of their careers if you can add 3 or 4 songs of high calibre to the catalogue , I would say that’s pretty good going .
