We all would like to think that our own cultures are superior to others around the world and that our respective countries are immune to atrocities. The fact of the matter is that oppression has been the rule–not the exception–and the reference to Darwinism is well-taken. The strong will dominate at the expensive of the weak. It does not necessarily follow that the strong are perpetually correct, but the end is that we became who we are as a result of it.
Second, the West has indeed become more homogenous. Ironically, this homogenization is often in the interest of “cultural diversity” which comes at the cost of the culture at large. The emphasis on the smaller differences within our societies becomes so paramount that we lose track and are even discouraged from expressing who we really are.
As a linguist, I find it sad that, for example, so many languages are contaminated with Anglicisms and that Americanization is so dominant in cultures around the world that these cultures lose their national identity. It is these cultural differences that *really* constitute diversity–an appreciation of all our differences–not a blending until all distinction is eliminated.
It will be a sad day when the entire worlds speaks a single language and everyone wears nothing but khaki.

To Mark Bee: I have a lot of very good friends in America, but I still have to say that Europe didt not give World War 1 + 2. Germany did! But what about Vietnam, Iraq, Bush x 2 etc. Now we can only hope for Obama.

Taisia, you did the interview? Well then shame on you for the most part, he’s not a political figure, who cares about his views… something tells me you’re just after a few pieces of garbage, rather than an informative or even relevant discussion.

Thumbs down to your interview, try interviewing the politicians you’re inferior to and the answers might better reflect the questions.

So you feel compelled to wind folks up, but their stance is as follows: “we don’t mind playing to anyone interested in “music” and that includes the Russian Prez, criminals in prison, or the bloody Pope… it doesn’t mean we support what they’ve done, it rather means they support us as artists, and thats all we care about.” It’s just a gig, not a rally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
