Whitesnake’s Flesh & Blood

Whitesnake Flesh & Blood cover art

The new Whitesnake album Flesh & Blood will be released on May 10 via Frontiers Records. Curiously, the date is about 3/4 into the band’s US tour — most artists these days use new releases to promote the live dates, not the other way around. The album will be available in multiple formats:

A promo video for Shut Up & Kiss Me was also produced; here’s a “Jaguar edit”, no less:

Quote Coverdale from the press blurb:

…After the intense darkness of our last video ‘Burn’, if anything, it’s ‘light’ snake, you know? We’ve got some really dark energy going on in the world right now, so we’re gonna write & record a fun, knees up, song about falling in love with a fabulous babe. You’re over-talking, over-compensating & she just looks at you, takes the reins & says, ‘Shut Up and Kiss Me!’ and that’s it!! My video director and creative partner Tyler Bourns and I discussed a great storyline for the video, which involves a surprise guest: my fabulous old white Jaguar. We ended up cleaning and detailing it, as it has been in storage since I moved to Lake Tahoe, then we dusted off my old turquoise silk jacket from the original ‘Here I Go Again’ video and I was thinking, “man, this is going to be fun!” It’s a respectful acknowledgment and positive nod to the past, just fun stuff.

Thanks to BraveWords for the info.

There may be even more vinyl versions. JPC Germany sells an exclusive white 2 LP version…

    Philippe Warda says:

The song and the video are OK. It’s looking more and more likely like I’m going to pass on the WS visit to my area after having been to most/all stops in the last 10 years in Toronto/Buffalo area. Same for the album.

The webshop for the red vinyl states it is limited to 250 copies, not 350. Any idea which one is correct?

Alrighty then, but not too much tongue, O.K.?….

    Adel Faragalla says:

Is this WS long kiss goodbye tour. BTW if they paid every girl in the video 100 bucks each that would make DC officially bankrupt. Well done WS you will definitely be inducted in the hall of fame next year.

    RB says:

Hmmm…fun video, but the song is pretty forgettable and David’s not really singing, mainly a talky/shouty thing going on. Nice Jag’ though.

He forgot to rhyme “luv'” with “tough”, but at least he, uhum, slipped/slid tried and trusted combos such as “fire/desire”, “much/touch” & “need/guaranteed” in. The wonders of the English language, I know poetry when I see it.

The boy from Redcar is somewhat reliable. No experiments please.

I like Reb Beach’s solo in the middle, very Steve Vai (in rock mode). Production is not as overblown as in the Doug Aldrich era, that overcompressed guitar wall of sound was painful to my ears.

First Whitesnake video ever where the bassist plays a Rickenbacker for those of you who care about such things. No other bass identifies more with Purple. That gets extra points.

    rik_uk says:

I enjoyed it. The video is fun to watch and the song is quite catchy, both with a touch of old school to them.

*Smiles and hits the play button …again…

    NWO says:

NIce to see them have their daughters (er granddaughters) and friends in the video!! Last WS concert I went to had plenty of MILFS or girls who forgot the 80’s were over and could fit into that spandex one more time!

    Mark B says:

Awful. Just awful. Reform the proper Whitesnake (pre-1987, obviously) and play blues rock in small English venues…. I can but dream.

Brilliant, great fun, nice to see the Jag again.

    Deep Diography says:

Who would have thought that in our enlightened times with “MeToo” debate and the like, there is still an agency that believes it is a good and realistic idea to show women that fall so much for a sports car, that they can not help but to pose on it and to leave lipstick impressions on the windshield? Do the members of Whitesnake really see women this way?

  19. 19
    Paul Jacklin says:

Lighten up with the lyrics – most people aren’t into rock music for the poetry – and the slightly cheesy lyrics are part and parcel of Whitesnake brand (and always have been).

It would be weird if they suddenly did a song on Islamic fundamentalism/global warming

  20. 20
    Buttockss says:

@ 19 they did write a song called Judgement Day, which is about all the killings of the Serbian people in the mid nineties.

  21. 21
    Paul Jacklin says:

@20 can you provide a reference for that? Not saying you’re wrong but it’s not immediately apparent from lyrics and I couldn’t find anything with a quick Google trawl

Still – even if true doesn’t really alter my argument that slightly cheesy lyrics are part of Whitesnake’s schtick and always have been (even for the classic early UK line-ups)

  22. 22
    Lutz says:

@ 21 Paul, if you google for “whitesnake judgement day”, you are going to get all the info you need:

    1) wikipedia – Album “Slip of the Tounge”

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slip_of_the_Tongue

    2) The lyrics:

    https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/whitesnake/judgementday.html

    3) The song is on “YouTube”:

    Have Fun,

  23. 23
    Buttockss says:

@ 21 When interviewed back in 1987 for MTV….David was asked about the worlds troubles, and he mentioned the song then, and what the story of the song was about…..

  24. 24
    Paul Jacklin says:

    @22 Ha, Ha!

That’s quite funny – is it a genuine misunderstanding? I’m a big Whitesnake fan and am very familiar with the song “Judgement day” without needing to Google it – studio/live versions live on my hard drive with a big play count.

It was the link between the song and Serbia I couldn’t find. Wikipedia certainly doesn’t mention it

@23 do you have a link for that?

  25. 25
    Lutz says:

@ 24 Hey Paul, I’m having a laugh with you!

This realy seems to be a genuine misunderstanding! Sorry for that!

  26. 26
    Buttockss says:

No link or anything from utube regarding info. I own it on old vhs tapes from the Headbanger’s Ball shows on MTV back in the late 80’s. Also on that show they showed for the first time the video of ” Still Of The Night “. Which was pretty cool at the time.

    Uwe Hornung says:

That Judgement Day has lyrically anything to do – even vaguely so – with genocide in Serbia is a real first time for me, it is not Coverdale’s style to latch on to a subject like that.

What I do remember is that Coverdale credited the (Eastern-tinged) RIFF from Judgement Day to a visit of his as a young man to the Balkans and that it had been in his head for many years. That was in a promotional interview he did for Slip of the Tongue around ’89/’90. It kind of stuck with me because I had remembered another, much earlier interview where he had mentioned that he had never left Redcar much at all. But he might have spoken about Mk III’s few gigs in Yugoslavia on the last tour with Ritchie in ’75.

That Coverdale would have in 1989 of all times – the zenith of showbiz superficiality in his life even by his standards; somehow I can’t envisage Tawny and him in indepth discussions about ethnic issues in the Balkans at post-gig parties – discovered his social and political awareness side as a songwriter strikes me as odd. He would have been somewhat prophetic too as violence only broke out in Jugoslavia in early ’91 – two years after the release of Slip of the Tongue which, while an unhappy, overwrought record at the best of times, was up to now not on my list for the likely causes of the Balkan civil wars of the 90ties. You just can’t blame Tawny and his hairdo for every ill in the world …

And speaking of David covering Purple, IIRC he played with that band for some time in the 70ies, so if he is not allowed to revisit Purple material, who is?! Granted, that album – like all of Whitesnake’s output since the millenium (his much underrated solo album Into the Light being the only exception) – is overwrought too (and especially the Mk IV stuff is really, really flat in rendition), but David can obviously not be helped in his miscomprehension that the impact of his voice somehow benefits from huge productions where the exact opposite would be true. Maybe Tawny and the US are to blame for THAT after all! ; – )
