Hughes’ live downloads
Glenn Hughes will release live recordings of his shows from the upcoming US tour. The tour starts on August 25 in Westbury, NY, and he will be performing his Classic Deep Purple Live Mk3/4 set. The recording will be made available as digital downloads only and can now be pre-ordered at $11.95 each, $29.95 for 3-show, or $74.95 for 9-show packages.
Unauthorized copying, while sometimes necessary, is never as good as the real thing

August 16th, 2018 at 12:20The whole point behind something like this is to make it fast and cheap. You don’t get that if you are going to produce cd’s. But if some of these shows turn out spectacular, I guess they can put it out on cd later if they want to.

@ 3. I don’t think too many of the kids today will be getting this since most of them wouldn’t even know the Deep Purple Mk III/IV era, let alone who he is. I guess that a few “older” folks might, I know some that have ditched their physical collection completely (!) and gone digital to the cloud.

August 16th, 2018 at 21:47I think it’s about time fans who want to enjoy their beloved bands kept their mobiles in their pockets and enjoy the live performances. If you still want to record the show on your phone then stay at home and save your money. After all you have two options. Watching the poor recording on YouTube or buy the live stream for the fraction of the ticket price.

Educating people is not a crime.
Glenn Hughes is trying desperately to get as much as possible out of his horrible 2-3 years in Purple.

This keeps making the rounds since decades, but it’s a myth.
Ritchie wanted to go into a Free direction (more blues, less Hammond dominance, a warmer-sounding vocalist) – with a funky bass player such as Andy Fraser. He checked Trapeze out live countless times – he knew how Glenn plays bass (Trapeze live was one white funk orgy, Glenn’s bass always mixed upfront) and wanted him exactly for that plus his vocal prowess (in Blackmore’s Mark III master plan, he was initially slated to sing with Paul Rodgers before the latter preferred to found Bad Company). There is an interview of Ritchie from the mid-seventies where he raves about Hughes’ bass playing style and the way it puts a lot more emphasis on syncopation (as opposed to Roger’s smooth bass playing style) making – in Blackmore’s view – even a song like Smoke on the Water sound different and more edgy.
It’s only when Glenn’s songwriting contributions and his Stevie Wonder vocal impressions clamored for a greater band contribution, that Blackmore felt he had had enough, the refusal by the others to do Black Sheep of the Family didn’t help matters. But I have yet to read a bad word of Ritchie on Glenn’s (indeed exquisite) bass playing (nor a bad word of Glenn on Ritchie’s guitar playing even though Tommy Bolin was more of a kindred soul to him). Even coked out of his mind, Glenn could still deliver on bass – he’s a natural talent.
Years later (when already in Rainbow), Ritchie even tried to poach John Glascock (a player with a similar edgy and attention-grabbing bass style as Hughes) from Jethro Tull (he failed). Glascock had come to Blackmore’s attention with fandango-proggers Carmen before, a band that The Man in Black dug a lot – and for good reason:

August 29th, 2018 at 19:17Uwe @ 23. I agree wholeheartedly re Glenn Hughes’ bass playing prowess. Though it seems he is known to most as “the voice of rock”, it is his bass playing that stands out for me. I can’t believe that he does not receive more accolades for it. He is very under-rated in my estimation.

Again, Glenn Hughes is an absolute monster on bass. Many other more popular / well known bassists receive all the accolades and top the various lists of sundry publications & websites. But in terms of real talent and ability, I believe Glenn is better than most of them,. However he, similar to the other Purple men (read: Blackmore, Gillan, et al) get short shrift from the music industry / media. They are simply not the media darlings that other more hyped acts are. As such the remain criminally under-rated.
