TBRO book due in November
Wymer Publishing in the UK is preparing another Deep Purple book by Jerry Bloom. The book is titled Time to Kill and is dedicated to the last year in the life of Mark 2 lineup — The Battle Rages On album and subsequent tour.
2018 is not only the 50th anniversary of Deep Purple’s inception but it is also the 25th anniversary of the last time the classic MKII line-up performed together. Ritchie Blackmore famously called it a day during the Battle Rages On… Tour with his last show being in Helsinki on 17th November 1993.
To commemorate this brief but extraordinary tour we are pleased to announce that on the 17th November this year we will be publishing TIME TO KILL – a comprehensive timeline of the last year in the life of Deep Purple MKII, written by Jerry Bloom.
The book includes a detailed look at the album as well as a day by day account of the tour. With planned dates in America cancelled and Blackmore quitting before the Japanese tour, there was in all just 37 shows. Author Jerry Bloom attended 10 of them, and was backstage at most of those, helping to give a personal account of the shenanigans that went on as the tour progressed.
As Jon Lord said at the time, “the shows were done at an energy level and ability level I’ve rarely seen attained before. I think we played as well as we’ve ever played.” Each show is covered in detail and the book is also crammed full of previously unpublished photos. Both dramatic on stage shots and candid off stage photos that show the band relaxing in between shows, in hotels and on planes. This is a truly unique insight into one of the most over-looked but dramatic times in Purple’s entire history.
Housed in a purple buckram presentation box with silver block foiling, it includes a set of 6 prints, suitable for framing.

I find this tour to be very interesting.
Come hell or high water (cd) not the Birmingham show, sound is superior to any 80s recording.
I found this version of Strange kind of woman, which was then later dropped from the set, to be really good with a band in top form. Ritchie seem to be enjoying himself.

August 8th, 2018 at 18:43In truth, I believe Ian’s pants had a lot to do with why Ritchie left. And Ian didn’t like his chin beard either. Nuff said.
Seriously, I saw the Frankfurt gig at the time (brilliant, I was really hopeful) and the one in Mannheim a week or two (and a considerable number of German gigs) later. By that time their relationship had already reached another nadir and you could see and feel it oozing from the stage, both were pulling down each other’s performance. During that gig their eyes did not seem to meet ever. I left dejected, thinking “this won’t last much longer” and it sure didn’t. The Helsinki departure didn’t surprise me one bit.
TBRO is to this day my least liked DP album (I know that some people think it is the best post-70ies album with Ritchie) – with or without Blackmore and with or without Gillan (all those reputedly “difficult” DP albums such as WDWTWA, Stormbringer, CTTB, HOBL, S&M, anything from the Morse era I like better and find more redeeming) . To me it sounds forced, unorganic and the overall unhappiness of the band is palpable, listening to it is always an emotional task. It couldn’t have gone on.

It seems Mr Bloom has hit upon a successful formula. First,For One Night Only was released as an ornately packaged,high priced book.Earlier this year,it was re-issued as a paperback,titled The Road To Knebworth,,priced slightly higher than a concert program.Lots of glossy pictures and an OK read. I hope Time To Kill gets the same treatment in a year or so,,because I can’t say I have roughly 100 Canadian dollars to spend on a 128 page book today.
August 9th, 2018 at 03:04Last Deep Purple concert saw was in the 1991 tour of Slaves and Masters with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals at The Tower Theature in New Jersey, you can tell at that time Ritchie was not interested in playing with the band anymore. Will definitly be picking up the book and album though.

August 14th, 2018 at 16:25Not the best time for DP and a very poor album. A few weeks after Ritchie’s departure I was enjoying the band in Hamburg with the great Joe Satriani. What a great concert!

August 15th, 2018 at 21:06Ian Gillan always claimed that all the material on TBRO was already made when JL turner was already in the band and it was a last minute change to ditch him for Ian Gillan on the request of the music production company backing the album and the tour. So let have some fairness when people claim that it’s the best DP album post the 70s era. Ian Gillan did an amazing effort to make this album sound decent and respectable. Ian managed to revive DP name from the dead. I think Ritchie had to leave the tour and the band as he was not successful in reviving DP with JL Turner. He lost and Ian won and the battle. I think that’s why Ritchie is so keen on a reunion Gig he wants to restore the battle of big egos with IG.

Apart from a few shows ( Birmingham for example) the maggiority of the live concerts in 1993 were full of energy….the battle rages on was a good album…if you listen to the backing tracks without the voice…Gillan has ruined this album…listen carefully to the tracks Lick ti up, talk about love, one mans meat, time to kill….and you realise that…

The live in Germany album from this tour is as good as Made In Japan…would highly recommend it to DP fans
