Ding-dong, we have a winner

German Albums chart for April 14, 2017

The new Deep Purple album inFinite has achieved top position in the German album charts for the week of April 7-14. It follows on the success of Now what?!, which also got to number 1 upon its release. This is the eighth number 1 Deep Purple album in the country, and the last time two consecutive studio releases went both to number 1 spot was in 1972, when Machine Head followed Fireball.

Congratulations to everybody involved.

We are summarizing inFinite chart positions around the world elsewhere.

Thanks to Fabian Sterlzig, Georgi Zbirchev, Nigel Young, Claus, and Giorgi for the info.

To my ear, Now What?! and Infinite are easily the best sounding (from a production standpoint) Deep Purple studio albums. Previous to these two stellar Ezrin productions, I think the next best, in terms of sound quality, were Who Do We Think We Are and Fireball.

We just hit the US Billboard Charts..in 3 categories: #6 in the Hard Rock, #16 in the Rock and #105 in the Billboard Top 200. Congrats to Deep Purple and their fans.

@12 use horning, oompah, oompah, oompah…. in my mind I kept hearing a mash up of SOTW with the Hogan’s Heroes theme. & BTW, wasn’t that a dapper Pierce Brosnan playing the part of Colonel Hogan watching them play?!. Ritchie would have been proud of them!. Smiles to ya.

Now that you mention it, our former Minister of Defense, who tripped over a doctor’s thesis that wasn’t really his, but liked AC/DC and Deep Purple, did look like Pierce Brosnan!

In your wildest dreams would you have ever imagined that Deep Purple would be #1 anywhere in the world in 2017?! A stunning accomplishment by any measure. Man, I love this band!

@17: I remember how ubiquitous In Rock was in Germany in 1970/71! Not only did it grace the display windows of every – yes, every – record store for a year and more, it was practically in every household. Admittedly, the iconic and extremely eye-catching cover which seemed to sum up “pop art” at the time, must have had something to do with it. It was perceived as both edgy and popular, a cultural phenomenon. In those two years, Purple were viewed as contemporary, “underground” and even slightly dangerous. In the years that followed, more and more apparently “cool people” turned their backs on them and the “corporate riffmeisters with one songwriting recipe only”-clicheé allegation came in.

I’ve never compared sales figures, but back then it “felt” like In Rock was more prevalent than either Machine Head or Made in Japan later on.

    Blackwood Richmore says:

@21 uwe hornung (had to redo that twice thanks to the auto spell corrector), I remember In Rock as being like an unexpected punch on the nose that left us all stunned for ages (the Black Night single stung like a savage wasp), during which time Fireball slipped in & out again without asking….. then Machine Head came along & had us all happily clapping our hands & stomping our feet as we sang along. I remember Slade & Sabbath were at about that level of popularity around my neck of the woods as well. God, I was so young then….

    uwe hornung says:

Slade were one of the most underrated Brit bands ever, Jim Lea’s bass playing and songwriting were immaculate. People didn’t see the musical craft behind their Charles Dickens meets Clockwork Orange outfits (nor how much Beatles the boyzz from Wolverhampton actually had in them).
