December 5th, 2016 at 17:40This is jazz, heavy jazz. Sounds absolutely great. Mr Gillan has often stated DP actually being an instrumental band in its essence, and it can be heard here. If Purpendicular was the Sergeant Pepper of Deep Purple I hope this one will be their Abbey Road. Hard time waiting for this one. Thanks.

December 6th, 2016 at 01:31Deep Purple, yeah, they were always the band with the keyboards, Hammond organ. This particular keyboard solo reminds me of modern day Uriah Heep.
It sounds like they’ve given Don a free hand at the steering wheel on this. Given that it’s only his fourth album with them & their final studio album, it’s gonna be good!. Suddenly I find myself rising to my feet & becoming erect…. 🙂 Be happy.

December 6th, 2016 at 19:00Good songs are never complex in tunes. If you try to jam in and squeezes your fragmented jamming ideas in one song then the result will sound much like the opener in ‘Now What’ which is called ‘Simple song’
December 6th, 2016 at 19:06That teaser sounds so much like a tuneless jamming part of a session. There is nothing wrong with great musicians mastering their instruments but it’s the final tune that gives a song it’s immortality.

December 7th, 2016 at 01:00I actually think ” Now What” was really a Keyboard album inspired , somewhat to Jon Lords sad passing! This sequence as sampled is a growling Hammond piece and is a teaser. I believe however that the album will have MORE Steve Morse signature riffs! But continue the progrssion thus known as a progressive album. I must admit I really do like it when the Band extends into somewhat unknown territory! I believe this album will transcend the excellent “Now What” and set a standard that will be remembered and revered for a long long time! Great!

I really do think that Don and Steve are capable of some great progressive stuff. I would like to hear some stuff in the vein of Dream Theater, King Crimson, and Return to Forever!

Yeah, he might have said that, but it wasn’t. Actually, Purpendicular is closest to Sgt. Peppers, I think. In my evaluation, Purpendicular, with its high quality writing, is still the best, solid, and most inspiring post-Blackmore album.
Abbey Road, being the last album The Fab Four recorded, is an approriate baseline for evaluating InFinite as part of musical development of Deep Purple.
December 8th, 2016 at 10:47I though Bananas had more life in it than Rapture of the Deep, that kind of plodded and is to me the worst of the Morse era albums. It’s not dreadful, just disappointing. Abandon was a good, slightly dark album, but it paled in comparison to Purpendicular’s unbridled enthusiasm and inspiration. That debut had real crackers on it.
Funnily enough, I recollect that Ian wanted Rapture to be their Sgt. Pepper’s! But in its uninspiredness it was more a Let it Be.

Bananas is shitty produced. The album has an amazing wealth of riffs and tuned and the lyrics are so witty.
I can’t bear the rush production of the album.

I couldn’t agree more. Rapture is very dark and I think it’s due to the fact that produced wanted it to sound mono and not stereo yuk give it an aging sound. The best song was MTV which is a fun bounce track not on the original album.
Also apart from perpendicular and abandon Steve Morse guitar sound is so inferior in the final production.
December 10th, 2016 at 18:38After “Now what ” and this you wonder what they’ve been pissing around at for the last 30 years, can’t believe this sound is produced by the people who bought us “house of the blue light” and “Bananas” ,its a remarkable return to the classic sound that made them, and just like Def Leppard last yr Sabbath yr before Rolling Stones doing what you do best always the best option, only one dragging his heels a bit is DC and Whitesnake,maybe he will look and respond with a return to the Snake sound of the 70’s and early 80’s …
December 10th, 2016 at 22:05The funny thing is, I can remember several years ago, when people were arguing about which album was DP’s worst… The contenders back then were Stormbringer, CTTB, THOBL and S&M. I can remember THOBL receiving an absolute caning in some publications, also from Lars Ulrich & from people I socialised with. Similar feelings were expressed by IG in certain interviews.
My oh my, how the times change! Nowadays these albums are practically venerated & more or less held up as cherished examples of how good things were in the old days. Faaaaaaaark!. Years after DP are long gone, I reckon you lot will look back on Bananas & ROTD with loving reverence!. 🙂 Oh… & another thing… I reckon TBRO is an absolute corker & a DP classic, I bloody love it!. So there. Eat my shorts!.

December 12th, 2016 at 05:43You have to be deaf not to like Come Taste the Band! That album has an ageless quality to it, I can’t find a single duff track on it. Bolin’s musicality is all over this album and while Jon made room for him, his playing is really sensitive to the new sound. And Ian Paice sounds on it like he had real fun in the studio.
House of Blue Light sounds constrained and a bit stiff, but it has real good ideas and songwriting on it. The execution could perhaps have been a bit looser. The only loose tracks on it are really Call of the Wild and of course the lovely Mitzi Dupree with a lyric so witty and autobiographical, risque, yet not dumb-sexist that no DC or Ronnie Dio could have ever attempted it. Ian Gillan writes the smartest lyrics in all of hard rock. Robert Plant should have gone to lyric school with him.
December 12th, 2016 at 22:15I certainly think the live shows on the Salves and Masters tour were much better than the ’88 tour. Ritchie’s attitude basically determined the quality of the shows. Joe Lynn by that time also had a better voice than Ian Gillan.
Then…. The quality of the shoes improved after Joe Satriani joined the band. I think that this proves once again, that Blackmore’s attitude determined the quality of the shoes, good or bad.
Come taste the Band was a great album, very refreshing, but the tour was “hit or miss” because of the drug issues.
Steve Morse, Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Don Airey, Roger Glover…. regardless of what you think of the albums, they have never given us a bad live show…. except for when big Big Ian struggles with his voice. I am not saying it is Ian’s fault.
Attitude determines a lot, and it is clear that some of our heroes value their fans more than others. They are the professionals.

I think you missing the point. Bananas and ROTD are poorly produced the first is very rushly produced and the second sounds mono with an aging sound.
Bananas is a fun diverse album from start to finish.
ROTD is very dark and has a very sad ending track debating the existence of God and war and peace.
I love and own every DP album and l love the musicians as I ve seen playing live and they become part of my music family.
But the bottom line is no body can come up with a formula on what makes a strong or weak song or what makes a song a hit or a flop. But every one can agree if a production of an album is good or not.
