Sao Paulo: I cried a little bit …
Rapture of the Deep’s third passage in my city. We all thought that would be nothing really new besides Mary Long and The Battle Rages On, but… here it is (read the comments after the set list):
Pictures of Home
Things I Never Said
Into the Fire
Strange Kind of Woman
Rapture of the Deep
Mary Long
Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye
Contact Lost
Steve Morse Solo
Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming
Steve Morse Riff Parade
The Well Dressed Guitar
The Battle Rages On
Lazy
Don Airey Solo
Perfect Strangers
Space Truckin’
Morse/Glover Jam
Highway Star
Smoke on the Water
—-
Hush (+Ian Paice Solo)
Roger Glover Intro
Black Night
– Pictures of Home: a powerful music to start with, but the highlight was that they played the final part of CHILD IN TIME solo… I mean… that part just before it gets slow again… wonderful to hear this alive!
– Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming: this is the most successful song from Morse era here in Brasil, and the last time that was played here was 2000 at the Concerto tour. Well… just after Contact Lost and his solo, Steve Morse started his riff parade with SIFLS… the audince got crazy and Gillan came back from the back of the stage, whispered in Morse’s ear and signalled for the band… so the song was played!
I think big Ian just wanted an extract for the song, but the band continued to play… the end of the song and the structure was diferent… Gillan forgot some lyrics… so the song was played in a very improvised way, but very authentic… a unique moment! I confess that I cried a little bit… That was exactly what I love in Deep Purple. Thank you guys!
Steve Morse/Roger Glover Jam before HS and Glover Intro before BN: I know these have been played for a long time… but now it’s longer and more elaborated… it’s fair to be listed separated at the set list!
Ian Paice solo: his solos in 2003, 2005 and 2006 were really short, but today he did a long and powerful one, just like the best days!
The Riff Parade: Sweet Child O’Mine as usual, but I got surprised to hear Crazy Train, from Ozzy… Don Airey run to play it too, but when he got at the keyboard, Morse stoped =P …Paranoid was played too!
Men In Black: I need to mention this… at some point of the show, the band (I think Big Ian) asked to get out all the security guys between the band and the audience! 🙂
Well. This was my 15th concert (not counting rehearsals in 2000) and my seventh concert with Don Airey… I can say this was the best with Don, since 2003. No doubt about it. Perfect night!
Cheers!

Marcel Vinicius, great thanks 🙂
I was waiting for the updates for sout american tour, I didn’t know even setlist.
Actually, DP’s South American tour 2008 was broadcasted in Georgian news program. It was too ridiculous, when the dictor said: “The band includes some old members, for example Ian Gillan, Roger Glover and Steve Morse”. Nothing was said about Ian Paice 😀
also, we’re waitting another Live album from Rapture Of The Deep tour. I want very very much, to listen Pictures of Home with Child In Time solo.
and I think, on Hard Rock Cafe Live 2005 Gillan could sing Child In Time – The greatest rock song for all time.
btw, waitting for the other reviews 🙂
February 25th, 2008 at 10:20oh, these journalists… I read in a Brazilian website that DP just played for the first time (!) in Russia…
February 25th, 2008 at 13:12This was my first Deep Purple´s concert! WOW!
February 25th, 2008 at 13:26“I can say this was the best with Don, since 2003. No doubt about it. Perfect night!”
couldn’t agreee more with you. by far the best concert for ROTD tour, they came top Brazil in 2005,2006 and now 2008.
Thanks for all the guys of Deep Purple!!!!!!!!!!
February 25th, 2008 at 14:45George!
The Child in Time part of the solo is just a few seconds, but it is the best seconds of it (on my humble opinion). I noticed that it has being played some months ago… check some youtube videos from north american tour or even the videos from last night here in Sao Paulo.
And here the concert ad was ridiculous too. Burn is on it… and they keep saying its the “They All Came Down To Montreux Tour”… tsc tsc
Thank you for the comment!
February 25th, 2008 at 14:49Cheers!
Well… A day before the Sao Paulo gig, I was in Rio to watch them for the 8th time. The concert was 40 minutes delayed due to some equipment misrouting, or so I’ve heard. Some guy annouced over the PA system that piece of info and, when the curtains were lifted, we could immediately see that. It wasn’t Paice’s drum set, neither Morse’s amps nor Glover’s bass. And the didn’t swtiych instruments as they do all the time. And to top it off (as Morse needed a floyd rose guitar to play HS) they gave a yellow-burst Musicman AXIS to him, and he used it. Now that was strange. Because of that, I didn’t feel the band very excited about the Rio gig… they looked like they were just doing their job
February 25th, 2008 at 14:55WOW! Mixing up the set list a little bit. Very Cool. The last time I saw them was in 2005, you’re basic greatest hits show. I hope they include the U.S. this year!
February 25th, 2008 at 19:09Sem palavras o show foi delirante, e o repertório muito bem escolhido, adorei ouvir a música Hush que é uma das que mais gosto …. Já sinto falta do show … vamos esperar pelo proximo..
Thanks … Purple….
February 25th, 2008 at 22:29WOW !!! Great set list in Sao Paulo!!!!! I´ll be waiting for the concert in my country, Venezuela.
February 25th, 2008 at 22:35Nothing new here. They are VERY good, but PLEASE surprise us one day. It’s the same and the same all over again. Steve might have played more concerts with DP than Ritchie, but he is also getting closer and closer to have played more Blackmore tunes in DP than Blackmore himself.
Look at it! And where are the “new” Mrk II and Mrk III and DP Mrk “Morse” area surprises. Like “House of pain”.
This is to easy – to much just another day in the office. Must be boring to play the same over and over all the time – all around the world.
You can do it so MUCH MUCH better for yourself and us.
February 25th, 2008 at 22:59See you soon.
The most suprising thing from last night´s gig was the level of energy showed by everyone in the band. The played 3 nights in a row and travelled more than a thousand miles between Rio-Curitiba-São Paulo. It is really a joy to see these guys smilling at each other and enjoyning the show. “Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming”, in my humble opinion, was the most emotonal and amusing moment of the night, the moment that Ian went back to the stage and looked at Steve like he was saying “are you sure?” was really fun. The crowd really went crazy on “Perfect Strangers”. “The Battle Rages On” and “Rapture of the Deep” were highlights among the classics.
February 26th, 2008 at 01:11Kind Regards.
in march 2006 in Milan with my surprise DP played “Living Wreck” and my lovely “Mary Long”…I loved this moment…
olaaaa
February 26th, 2008 at 08:25E viva o YouTube, que já está recheado de videos do show que me fazem voltar no tempo varias e varias vezes!
February 26th, 2008 at 14:06DEEP PURPLE IS SIMPLY THE BEST.
February 26th, 2008 at 17:23I HEARD “MARY LONG” FOR THE FIRST TIME.
FANTASTIC!
This was my 3rd DP show, and the one I liked least. Not because of the band, but because of the audience. There were too many “old” people, pairs, whole families, and they don’t behave like the younger fans used to do in Brazil, with the crowd crushing the closest possible to the stage. For this reason I couldn’t get close to the stage, unless I risked to hurt a few people. Of course every body has the right to attend to a show (I wish I could see DP when I get old, but time will not allow…), but the vibration of the public was not the same (except for the Sometimes I fell like screaming part, that was really wonderful).
The band was great, very good surprises, great set list. They should play some songs from Bananas (not only Contact Lost), a wonderful album.
I hope to see the band again, under “normal” brazilian conditions.
February 26th, 2008 at 20:02The concert was awesome as usual. It´s unbeliveable how they play so happy enjoying themselves and the crowd. The battle Rages On was great… I´ve just seen once they play this song. And it´s very nice to see “older” people, couple and family in the concert!
February 28th, 2008 at 04:18Hope to see them again like in the concerto tour…
