New Album Update
Don Airey believes the new album by Deep Purple is now complete and being mixed by Bob Ezrin.
In an interview with TASS, the Russian News Agency, he confirms
“As far as I know, it’s all recorded and now… it’s on the tender mercies of Bob Ezrin (Canadian producer – TASS), he’s going to mix it. I haven’t been given a release date, I know nothing about that as yet. If I knew, I’d tell you but I don’t,” Airey said.
The musician said that the band won’t play any songs from the coming album.
“We won’t play anything from the new album until the album is released,” he said.
In his conversation with TASS the musician revealed he has a connection with Russia. When asked about his favorite place in the Russian capital Mr Airey mentioned the Moscow conservatory:
“I always visit there because my piano teacher, when I was in college, he’d been taught there by Heinrich Neuhaus. So it’s always a nice little visit for me to go there. I’ll just go inside and have a quick look, it’s nice to be there, it’s such an amazing place with an amazing atmosphere. My piano teacher was taught there, the guy who taught me when I was in Manchester, he’d studied there. He told me in Manchester, he ended up in the Manchester school of music, but he studied in Moscow under Neuhaus and his friends were Richter and Gilels. He was called Ryszard Bakst, he was a wonderful musician,” Airey said.

Wonder what the album title will be?. Anyone hazard a guess?. “Pearl of the atom”. Lol. Smiles to ya!.
June 2nd, 2016 at 14:37Perhaps another inconsequential album… those you hear three times and then you gradually relegate to oblivion.
Do not know if it’s me or is the band’s who are aging …
In any case , I think that with this new album I will make an exception .. I will download a copy on Internet and then I see if it’s really worth buying… I do not feel excited about this new release because with ‘Now What’ was the same I mentioned before: The initial excitement listening the new material , only to disappear as a simple article in my collection of purple things few days later…
Of course, all IMHO
June 2nd, 2016 at 15:16It’s like pulling teeth. All this secrecy and me know nothing business is laughable. Frankly my darling I don’t give a damn. I ve got BCC reunion and album to look forward to. New fresh material that artist play live on stage after release not just unplayable CD in the draw.
June 2nd, 2016 at 15:20Let’s hope it ain’t a pile of shite like the last album
June 2nd, 2016 at 15:32Opinions vary John; you’re in the minority!
June 2nd, 2016 at 16:27The last album was just as good as In Rock, Who do we think we are, and Machine Head. Crazy thought, but there it is. Totally looking forward to the new release.
June 2nd, 2016 at 16:49Sounds great!
I hope for some snippets like the ones before the release of “Now what?!”
And it’s crystal clear, that Bob Ezrin will do a superb job (like always)!
The never ending Machine Head-Tour will come to an end and we the
fans will enjoy the new songs, great….
Have a nice Day!
June 2nd, 2016 at 20:17Now What?! Was arguably their best effort since Purpendicular.
June 2nd, 2016 at 20:53Never in a million year’s
June 2nd, 2016 at 22:28Stop living in the past my friend. Steve Morse is Deep Purple, and Deep Purple is Steve Morse.
June 2nd, 2016 at 22:30Contrary to disbelief, “the backing tracks were done by August 2014.” -Steve Morse, Roseburg, OR. That was two years ago. This album release will mark five years in the waiting unless they get it out in 2016. That’s not as bad as 8 years between releases, but it’s pretty bad concerning how much time is left. Sorry they will not be on stage in their mid 70s. You do the math. This album should have that something that is worth the wait, or it will be just another album for the sake of it. What an entity.
June 3rd, 2016 at 02:20So many people thought ” rapture of the deep” would be their last album…. Back in 2013 and 2016, this is great!!!
June 3rd, 2016 at 09:09here we go again. Now what!?
June 3rd, 2016 at 09:16other than one or two tracks it was mediocre. the good production and sound engineering may have helped, but it lacked the intrinsic purple imagination or momentum. i am not trying to be nostalgic here, but taking purple from its classical rock roots is like a circumcision gone wrong.
June 3rd, 2016 at 09:19The last album was great but Steve have lost his live-improvisation-possibilitys.
I hope it will be another great album but ….
LIVE … they lost a lot of their legendary: “They-are-THE-best-live-band-ever” -habitus !!!

June 3rd, 2016 at 13:29“Stop living in the past my friend. Steve Morse is Deep Purple, and Deep Purple is Steve Morse.”
Actually, these days, Don Airey is Deep Purple and Deep Purple is Don Airey. And I’m not saying that as a criticism, but Don dominates Purple like he has dominated no band before with perhaps the exception of Colosseum II. In a way, DP have come full circle, they arer today a keyboard-led band just as they were in 1968 when a young Ritchie had not yet quite found his feet. I’m fine with that, Steve has made a lot of room for Don and that speaks for him as a musician. And Don is obviously enjoying the creative space he gets with ze Pürps.
Now What?! was a lovely album by a collective of musically virile senior citizens, nothing wrong with that. Purple will never ever ride (and also shape) the Zeitgeist again like they did with In Rock, but neither would The Beatles if they were all still alive and recorded something today.
Enjoy them while they are still here.
June 3rd, 2016 at 14:00Essentially, Deep Purple albums of the current line up are PROG albums which is small wonder given that both Steve and Don were card-carrying PROG-musicians before they earned money elsewhere. And Ian Gillan has since Fireball-days had a penchant for off-the-wall vocal lines (he peaked in that department with The Ian Gillan Band which I am a great fan of – when will Steve Wilson finally do a 5.1 mix of Clear Air Turbulence, it would be spectacular!).
June 3rd, 2016 at 14:06I think the title will be “SO What?!”
June 3rd, 2016 at 14:22Chris VerWys @6 & 10, I could not have expressed your sentiments any better! Ah, there she goes again. I’m wigglin’ in my chair….! :>
Peace,
June 3rd, 2016 at 14:45Ted
The last album Now What was a classic I was so surprised on how great that was and I am A Blackmore fan from way back.
June 3rd, 2016 at 16:32I must say I like Bananas very much many good songs on that album. it’s a pity that they don’t play any songs live from that album, except from contact lost.
June 3rd, 2016 at 17:45Oh, John Michael Trott-leave your childhood behind …
June 3rd, 2016 at 20:10@ Michael Trott,
A pile of shite? The previous album? You ARE joking, aren’t you?
Well, people have their opinions…, but why don’t you go and write an album on your own?
Looking forward to it – regardless of what you will come up with!
ps. No hard feeling implied 🙂
June 3rd, 2016 at 22:22Can’t wait to hear the new album. I hope it’s as good or better than Now What!? Which was a great album.
I would really like to hear Paicey get more creative on this next album. He hasn’t been as creative with his drum parts since Purpendicular. Absolutely Brilliant Drumming.
June 4th, 2016 at 00:08@2, 3, 4, 14 and all other nay-sayer demagogs… Since you are all negative about present Purple, please list here your top 3 other go to bands that you prefer over them.
June 4th, 2016 at 03:26Reading through this it sure is amazing how some nail “Now What” as on par with albums like In Rock(it sure rivals it) and others say it was crap. There is only one answer to that problem. Some actually listen to music and some expect carbon copies of the past. I suspect they don’t listen to In Rock much either, but notice how they have such expectations nonetheless. It really boils down to tolerance. Their ability to tolerate Purple without Blackmore, and my ability to tolerate that. I don’t rubbish you, I rubbish your attitude, sense of history and attention span. Oh btw, piss the hell off. 😀 So you’ve played it three times for example, and that somehow validates yours opinion of it? Yawn.
June 4th, 2016 at 16:31REALLY looking forward to the latest Purple platter. Thanks for the update.
Been a fan since ’72, and I’m very proud of their long wild history.
June 4th, 2016 at 18:30@25
Great question Tracy!
June 4th, 2016 at 18:30Following Tracy (#25) kindly request, here I list my top 3 other to go bands over the current Deep Purple:
. Riverside
. Beardfish
. Siena Root
Well, my friend, just to name a few…
Deep Purple were Gods…. recently I did travel to Panama and found the Made in Japan special edition in a store, the salesman, a man in his 60’s, named the complete line up of the band in that August of 1972, but he couldn’t remember the name of the current guitarrist! He told me a phrase i Will Never forget :”There’s maybe 3000 guitarrist Who can play like the current guitarrist, but there is only one Blackmore, 3000 keyboardist Who can play like the current organist, but only one Jon Lord, that is why this band were Gods”
That phrase Made me think about What Deep Purple is now, and then i did realize that for me there is only one Deep Purple, the one that make me feel really emotional, and, sadly, the current line up, don’t make me feel such emotions again.. Of course : ALL IMHO
June 4th, 2016 at 21:53I personally can’t wait. I thought Now What?! Was right up there with their best (even if its different than In Rock). ☺
June 5th, 2016 at 02:07I reckon the new album will sound much the same as the past few Purple albums with Steve… you’ll either like it, or you won’t. By now, I think we have a fair idea of what we can expect to hear from the Purps. There’s nothing new under the Sun. My hunch is that Adel won’t like the album, neither will LRT, but you never know…. I could be wrong!. Anyhoo… Just wondering what everyone thinks of the Axl/DC concerts. Is Axl Rose a good fit with ACDC?. Sounds O.K. to me. I think Marc Storace from Krokus could have been a good fit too. May the farce be with you!.
June 5th, 2016 at 13:41Whether it’s good or not, the members of Purple should respect their fans enough to stop playing games with them. They came out two years ago – as someone posted above – and said the album was almost in the stores. Then more of the same hogwash this past winter, to the point many people thought it would be released at about the same time as the Hall of Shame induction in April. Now, all this post-production talk, like it’s ready to go to print in any minute. Stop it already. Just be honest with the fans, and say – “Hey, we’re raking in a lot of dough, let the fans eat cake. We’re fat, Lazy and what the masses don’t know won’t hurt them. And by the way, our “average fan’s age is 18”, according to Gillan. That’s a key reason you don’t hear me doing radio interview with Gillan, anymore. I got tired of his incessant lies. http://ultimateclassicrock.com/deep-purple-2016-album-update/
June 5th, 2016 at 23:17Errolarias @29,
Why do you and others that do not like all things Purple come onto this board? If you have no interest in anyone not Black Guy or Sir Jon, aren’t you wasting your time? I find comparisons beyond lunacy.
Riverside is not Beardfish, Beardfish is not Siena Root, Siena Root is not Purple Mark 1, Purple Mark 1 is not Purple Mark 4, the Black Guy is not Steve Morse, vice versa and on and on. All unique different individuals/entities etc.
I remain curious and amused.
Anybody know what happened to purplepriest1965?
Peace,
June 6th, 2016 at 14:58Ted :>
@ 29
My review of bands you listed instead of DP.
Riverside – ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Beardfish – ok – cross between Supertramp/Yes – not big on the vocals but I didn’t listen to much of them. Maybe it will grow on me..
Siena Root – Musically gifted band – very well arranged songs – vocal are good – songwriting – poor.. They are one of those bads that come on and you wish they had more than they give you. Like something is missing. To me – it is weak songwriting – sort of like BCC – I like their stuff but I can’t remember one tune from another…
And I am sorry but the last DP album is more enjoyable and memorable to me than anything you listed above.
Ok now I will give you what I listen to as well as DP! (All fairly new bands!)
The Temperance Movement
Monster Truck
Rival Sons
The Heavy
Vintage Trouble
The Winery Dogs
The Sheepdogs
Ok have at them! I love em all!! Just to name a few.
PS – If you download music and never listen to VINYL – then I don’t really trust comments about what is or isn’t good music…
NWO
June 6th, 2016 at 15:57For me it sounds always great when old band still makes some new music. But I just can’t understand that: “We won’t play anything from the new album until the album is released”. For me the most intersting part of the show would always be, if I hear something I have not yet heard. If they would do some surprises in their gigs, it would be surely just good promotion for them. In any case, I’ll see them in next Fri, ans still hoping even some surprising element there, not just same, even great, but already too familiar songs.
June 7th, 2016 at 19:57Thank you Errolarias, your post included what might be the title of the new Album.
June 9th, 2016 at 14:56What, Deep Purple (with appropriate punctuation, of course)
Oh, man. I can’t believe how heavy the conversation has gotten. Purple is our favorite band and they have a new album coming out. That’s great news!
Also, since people are listing what they like beside Purple, I gotta throw Steven Wilson into the mix. Hand. Cannot. Erase. is a work of art.
June 11th, 2016 at 00:51I thought the last album was great, still better than any other band can produce. As for the arguments over the world’s greatest bands, let me just say that i have been a huge Purple fan for 40 years. In Rock is the best album of all time, hands down.Deep Purple are the best band of all time, they are still the best in the world.I am really looking forward to the new album, and it will be better than anyone else is capable of.
June 11th, 2016 at 13:06@38 Pete, so you wouldn’t rate the Beatles, the Rolling Stones or the Who then?.
June 11th, 2016 at 21:05Hi Ted
June 13th, 2016 at 15:48Blackwood Richmore,as for the Beatles,Stones and the Who,personally I quite like a few tracks from all of them, but on the whole,i think they are all vastly overrated bands who put out very average pop/ rock.No disrespect to them, just my opinion.I think Deep Purple are in a league of their own, they have that magic that no other band ever comes close to.For me,the best of the rest, great bands are Vanden Plas,Redemption,Dante and Poverty’s No Crime. All prog metal bands I know,i just don’t think there are many really good heavy rock bands left.Y&T are exceptional at their best,Dave Meniketti is probably the best guitarist in the world now that Mark Reale has sadly left us.So I can’t leave out Riot either.
June 13th, 2016 at 20:53I have been hooked on DP for the last forty-odd years; sure, I have my faves and my not-so-faves, but anything from the greatest band of the world feeds my addiction and therefore gets my full blessing. To those who don’t like it: I can’t judge your taste (I was going to write “poor” taste… hmmmm) and you are totally entitled to your opinions, but it is so boring to read you’re negative comments and attitude in these pages. So pointless!
June 14th, 2016 at 09:53@ 41 Pete, I guess you like what you like!. The Beatles are the biggest selling band of all time, AC/DC take 2nd place. Myself, I have my favourites also. Love Blue Oyster Cult to death, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet likewise. So many favourites… Mokobenj from Australia kick ass, as do duo Kings of the North & also the band Drapht. Samantha Fish is cool, as is King King. An old 1970’s band from way up north called Titanic had the spark, but are long gone. Then there are the real prog bands… I guess I could just go on & on…. I’m eclectic to say the least!. Smiles to ya.
June 15th, 2016 at 13:11Big man Dave rules indeed, Pete.
June 16th, 2016 at 21:23Really loved Now What? and am thus looking forward to the new album.
Yes it might not be as revolutionary as In Rock & co but to me it’s still very good and I love listening to it.
So thanks DP for going strong!
June 17th, 2016 at 08:30Now what? was really good!
Im looking forward to the new album and tour!
Stockholm gig yesterday was absolutely brilliant.
July 3rd, 2016 at 20:51Only for Vincent Price Now What deserves a good place in the purple ranking.
There are other good tracks also which work well live (Got the To the rising sun album and they sound really good).
Maybe not their best, obviously, but a really good album IMO.
And lots of technique and knowledge in there. You really need to listen in detail to get the best out of it. Dynamics, rhythms etc.
It’s not radio station friendly album.
It reminds me of another badly rated purple gem, Come And Taste the Band, which when I listen to it now, it has some serious good material in it.
July 12th, 2016 at 15:49
