Hughes’ European tour
Glenn Hughes has announced a European tour towards the end of the year. The tour starts in Stuttgart, Germany, on November 22, also visits Czech Republic, Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, France, and Spain, and wraps up on December 14 in Madrid. Living Colour are billed as co-headliners for the whole tour. The blurb says that tickets go on sale April 15, although some dates are already being sold.
Full details in our calendar.
Those that are fortunate enough to see any of these upcoming concerts may consider themselves blessed. Treasure the time you have, it’s so fleeting. Glenn is more awesome than you are!.
April 14th, 2016 at 05:55Agreed Blackwood Richmore @1. I have seen Glenn twice in the past couple of years, 2013 in Melbourne, Oz; and just before Xmas 2015 in Singapore. His voice is miracle of nature. 64 years old and still able to hit notes as high as D5 to A5. And he plays some mighty fine bass guitar too. He has a massive catalogue of great songs. Both concerts I saw were almost completely different in song choice – the only common denominators being Mistreated and Burn.
So yes, to anybody who has the opportunity to see Glenn Hughes in concert, do yourself a favour and go see him play.
April 14th, 2016 at 15:55Bring this to the states and I’ll make an exception to travel if I have to. As for being more awesome than I am. That’s about as ignorant as it gets. He’s proving nothing but self pomp. I don’t care how good anyone is, if they carry it wrong, I’m never impressed.

April 16th, 2016 at 07:56Would love to see Living Colour.
April 16th, 2016 at 10:323&4: Humility and Living Color would be a great time!
April 16th, 2016 at 21:36I was into Living Colour back in the 90’s, went to a gig in ’93 & they were devastating. Hughes might want to be careful, as they may take the limelight so to speak! A brilliant band back then, as i am sure they still are to this day! I don’t get into that sort of music anymore as I left it behind. Dream Theatre (Theater) i was into back then also, note the spelling, as in colour, great to see LC spell it correctly! Brilliant musicians indeed! Cheers.
April 16th, 2016 at 22:51MacGregor @ 7. I think the show will be very very FUNKY!! Living Colour and Glenn Hughes. You have to figure that LC is going to spur GH to do the funk thang!
April 17th, 2016 at 16:36@ 3 LRT, so I guess Glenn must be pretty good & carrying it right then, if you’re willing to travel if you have to, should Glenn bring this to the States. Just to see “nothing but self pomp”?. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear that you were impressed (by Glenn’s awesomeness). Please excuse my ignorance…. Smiles to ya!.
April 17th, 2016 at 22:22DeeperPurps@ 8- yes indeed, not that Mr Hughes needs any encouragement! I wasn’t into LC back in the day for the ‘funk’, but I didn’t mind a little here & there. It was their hard rock attitude that lured me to their first 3 albums, especially the 2nd & 3rd albums. It is an interesting double, Hughes would be more known in Europe I would imagine! I am not sure how popular LC were or are, in that part of the world. Cheers.
April 18th, 2016 at 06:38MacGregor @10. Its the blend of Vernon Reid’s hard rock guitar & attitude combined with heavy driving funk bass guitar that makes LC so appealing. For example check out LC’s “Open Letter to a Landlord” – its a perfect example.
And on the Purple side of things, check out “You Fool No One” (live version) from Made in Europe when Glenn Hughes’s funky syncopated bass kicks into overdrive at 5:48…….Sublime!! Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar is absolutely wonderful on that piece too, but listen again carefully to what GH is doing underneath all that. He is a master of the bass guitar, a virtuoso in his own right.
April 19th, 2016 at 01:30The 3 first LC albums I still love.
After that the songs never stay in my head.
Saw them live a few times.
Excellent stuff.
LC and Glenn and Mothers Finest, the 3 big ones.
April 19th, 2016 at 23:01Hey Rock Voorne @12. Thank you for that mention of Mother’s Finest. I had never heard of them before, but have just checked out a few of their live performances on YouTube. Wow!!, that lady can sure sing! And the guitar is very tasty too. Lots of funk with crunchy guitar licks – very good. Thank you again, I have made a new discovery! Will try to track down their other stuff, definitely interesting.
And another band to add to your list in this particular vein is early 70’s Funkadelic….the album “Maggot Brain” is a good example.
All this to say that it was Glenn Hughes’ in Purple Mark III that opened up the funk rock door for me. Ever since I heard You Fool No One live, I wanted more of that. Eventually I found it in Living Colour, a bit of Faith No More (The Real Thing & Angel Dust albums especially), A bit of Rage Against the Machine, onto Funkadelic, and even mid-70’s electric Miles Davis.
April 21st, 2016 at 02:07DeeperPurps@ 11- don’t forget Will Calhoun on the drums, sheeesh, what a groover he is! A groove monster perhaps! In regards to Hughes & his bass playing. He is a wonderful player, I have always liked his approach to the bass. No disrespect to Glover at all, he does some nice things & is as solid as a rock. But Hughes was always much more interesting to my ears! Always loved the MIE Purple album, great stuff! Talking from a drummers perspective of course, I always enjoy a bass player who can groove & get syncopated etc! And of course play with plenty of melody! Cheers.
April 21st, 2016 at 12:01MacGregor @14, yes Will Calhoun is a master drummer – very versatile, can play anything. I recently picked up a world music / jazz album called “Electric Sufi” by a Tunisian singer / oud player named Dhafer Youssef and was surprised to see that both Doug Wimbish and Will Calhoun from Living Colour were playing on it. That particular album is pretty mellow music so one really has to be in the right head space to listen to it, but can’t deny that all the players on it are very talented.
Speaking of this Dhafer Youssef guy, I recently discovered his music. He has a voice that hits notes as high if not higher that Glenn Hughes or early Ian Gillan. Its pretty cool stuff – he blends jazz, rock, world (Arabic / Turkish etc) into some really nice sounding pieces. Go onto YouTube and check out this concert (its got more harder playing on it that Electric Sufi) The concert starts out soft & slow and picks up tempo all throughout. There’s even a guy on a Strat who adds some nice rhythms and a few tasty solos here and there. Give it a try and let me know what you think:

As for MIE and You Fool No One, yes it was the drums that laid the foundation for that song. That was Ian Paice’s baby! And the band built the tune around his rhythm. It has a fantastic groove to it, and Glenn Hughes was the perfect bassist for it. I read once that Ian Paice said playing with both Roger Glover and Glenn Hughes was great, and whereas Roger locked in tight with him and gave him lots of space; Ian really had to up his game with Glenn Hughes because there was so much more going on in the playing. You remember that one?
April 22nd, 2016 at 02:09I’m not as big a fan of Hughes’ singing as many here, but he’s done some great music, and seeing him and Living Color together would be a great night out, so I’m disappointed there are no UK dates in that list.
Also, I’m slightly jealous of US fans getting to see him with Joanne Shaw Taylor, who’s one of my favourite new(ish) acts of the last few years, and always great live. Fortunately, I’m getting to see her tomorrow night (supporting Wilko Johnson), so I’m not too gutted 🙂 If anyone here is going to Glenn’s US shows later this year, make sure you catch her set too!
April 22nd, 2016 at 10:58DeeperPurps @ 15 – wow, I have never heard of this Youssef guy! Fantastic quality concert also, great musicians, dare i say it, real musicians playing real music! Will watch more of it later tonight. Cheers.
April 22nd, 2016 at 22:01A Deep Purple related Living Colour connection can be found on the album Deep Purple new York where LC ‘s singer Corey Glover and drummer Will Calhoun do Fireball and Burn.

April 23rd, 2016 at 13:48On another note, by coincedence I just found this tribute band with an amazing RatBatBlue cover!!!!!

Hopefully the rest of the material is as good as this.
What an exception this is.
April 23rd, 2016 at 13:52Most of the tribute bands cant deliver a singer that satisfies.
Hi MacGregor @ 17, yes its always great to make a new music discovery.
Over the years some of the best stuff I have stumbled across are those times I have walked into a record store or elsewhere and heard something playing that really appealed to me; then asked the clerk the name of the band/album and from there go down a new musical pathway of discovery.
Am always glad to learn about another band as our friend Rock Voorne put me onto the other day in the form of Mother’s Finest. And am always glad to introduce someone to something new they have only heard for the very first time.
Enjoy!
April 25th, 2016 at 16:01Hey Rock Voorne at 18 & 19. Thanks for those clips. Really good ones. I especially like the LC & co. funky treatment of all those Deep Purple classics. Have bookmarked that Black Night tribute album. Will go back for a few listens. The Rat Bat Blue cover by that other tribute band is very well done too. Amazing what one can find on Youtube!
April 25th, 2016 at 16:21RV@18;
And then JLT begins to sing “Black Night”… Buuuuuurrrrrrp! NEXT.
