Hughes will show up and wants to sing
With all this RnR Hall of Fame hoopla, looks like Deep Purple are getting more coverage by the likes of Billboard and Rolling Stone than in the previous 25 years combined. Billboard has some quotes from Glenn Hughes clarifying that he indeed will be attending the induction ceremony (in case anybody had any doubts):
All I know is I’m getting the award. There’s a lot of gossip and innuendo about who’s saying what. I’d love to play. I’d love to sing. And so would David.
A month ago David said to me, ‘Shall I reach out to Ian Gillan to figure out what we’re gonna do?’ He came back and told me that there’s a problem that Don and Steve aren’t getting inducted and there’s all sorts of scenarios with that and grumblings and this and that, and I said, ‘Well, I’m just gonna stay out of the way,’ and Coverdale is as well. If Ian Gillan wants to run the show on behalf of his Deep Purple that’s his business; my business is to show up and gracefully accept my award. But we’re really hoping that we will be invited to sing. I’d like to think that Deep Purple can be just one big happy family on the night, y’know? Egos outside the door and be graceful in what we do.
On the possibility of Blackmore attending the event:
You just never know with him, but I’d love it if he showed up. I just hope he has the balls to (attend), and for God’s sake he bloody wrote those songs. he wrote those riffs. He wrote ‘Smoke on the Water.’ Whatever happened — the eccentricities, the behavior, the name-calling and all that stuff — I say let it all go. Blackmore should be there accepting his award. I’d be very upset if he didn’t.

Glenn was in the band 2 1/2 years and he acts like he’s been there 1968. I’m also sick of seeing him in all these Deep Purple DVDs. Saw Mark III in 74 and ever since I heard his obnoxious screams throughout the shows, I disliked him. Listen to the live CDs of III and IV and hear for yourself. I’m surprised that Glenn hasn’t started his own version of Deep Purple, touring playing those songs. His hair is styled that way because he is bald underneath. March 10th, 2016 at 16:05You have to love our Glenny-Boy for this! Finally someone makes a gracious and adult (“adult” and “Glenn Hughes” in one sentence!) statement on the whole thing. And now we even have someone who will hit the hiiiiiiiiiiiiigh notes on that night too, I was already getting worried.
I still have hopes that Ian G. will come to his senses and realize that he is in no way belittling Steve’s and Don’s valued contributions to the band by having former members have their deserved share of the limelight. Deep Purple at their commercial live-zenith was Mk III at the California Jam and let’s not rewrite history: It was a coked-up Glenn H. that strutted the stage there, not Ian Gillan or Roger Glover.
Maybe they should all do Hush together, that is neither Mk II nor III, not even a DP-penned composition, but it set the ball rolling. And if Rod E. shows up unexpectedly – if he still lives, someone must have broken this RRHOF-thing to him -, so much the better.

March 10th, 2016 at 16:37I can’t believe the bashing here. Mark II and Mark III are both very deserving for this honour. I believe Purple should have gotten the same respect as Zeppelin and Sabbath. This is an institution that hasn’t inducted YES yet either.
March 11th, 2016 at 03:23For anyone who bashes Glenn Hughes here, then your not true Purple fans cause that Burn album measures up with any of the MK2 album and rock album worth mentioning. This is the band we love and it would be the coolest thing to have them all perform together. I’m sure Jon Lord would smile up in the sky.
Indeed, wouldn’t it be great if they could “for 1 night only” forget all the histrionics and the lot of them just get up there and jam!? Can’t see it happening of course but we can hope.
However have to say that Glenn’s self-serving pseudo intellectual ramblings continue to make me dislike him more than I previously did.
He is entitled to be there, no problem with that, but “my business is to show up and gracefully accept my award” and “Egos outside the door and be graceful in what we do” comments rile me to the limit. Glenn Hughes – graceful? Ego’s – let’s not go there! His contribution to DP was so minimal (at best) that he should be embarrassed about being included in the thing, he should certainly be more magnanimous about it, but that will surely not happen. Truth is Steve & Don have made a significantly greater contribution to DP so should be there, although that’s not Glenn’s fault of course.

March 11th, 2016 at 14:21Yes, Glenn is an over-eager puppy, but why all the hate, there is nothing evil in the man, he’s just taskingly overengaged most of the time. For a man his age, the range of his voice is nothing less than astounding – in comparison Gillan, Coverdale, even Dio all had/have issues (as is unsurprising at their age, Glenn is a wonder of nature). And – I’m speaking as a bass player and this seems to be ignored all too often here – his edgy and propulsive, rhythmically and groove-wise idiosyncratic bass playing is a joy to hear and see. Glenn hits a note on his Precision and you know it’s him.
Not everything he’s done is great and, yes, he’s inconsistent with his projects, but he’s part of the Purple family, he’s the weird little auntie that gets invited too, you’d miss her otherwise even though she gives the other guests headaches. And I for one dug his screaming with Mk III and IV, what he did with (to?) Georgia on my mind on Russian Foxbat/Long Beach gives me goose bumps of the good kind to this day. As does “First Step of Love” when he hits that impossibly high note. Don’t a l w a y s knock him!

I really do not know why the mark 1 and 3 lineups are even inducted. I love their music but they didn’t have an impact on Rock and Roll history. If they must be there the set lest should be as follows:
Hush, Black Night, Highway Star, Space Trucking, WFT, Perfect Strangers, Burn and Smoke on the Water as an encore with a nice jam showing off their musical talents.
I don’t think they will be allowed the time to have a big set list.

Get them all on board: Rod Evans & Nick Simper, Ritchie Blackmore off course… they started it all back in 1968. And off course Ian Paice, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes. In memoriam Tommy Bolin & Jon Lord. And not forgetting Steve Morse and Don Airey.
I mean, nobody owes anything to anyone, but try to look at it this way: it would be the last chance to do something like this, we all know that.
Jon’s dead. They’re all dropping like flies, the musicians of that era. Life is too short. It doesn’t help that the Hall got it wrong–not only 25 years late, but to add further insult, inexplicably excluding members of the family–nor is it likely that they will right things the way we’d all like. I agree with getting the family–the WHOLE family–up on stage to celebrate all of the permutations that make up Deep Purple. And really, Ritchie, if you’re happy for us, your fans, you’d get your ass over there to perform for the people who love you. You can ALL put aside your differences for a couple of hours for US, your fans, the people who gave you your living. Consider it giving back to your community, the people who supported you all of these years. You can do that!
