Lazy 1991
This is the band called Deep Rainbow Purple performing Lazy at the Radio City Music Hall in NYC. Check out Roger deputising on harmonica and guitarwork from the banjo palyer. Frenetic is the word of the day. Now, did somebody tell the singer that the band has no dress code?

I was at this show. It was the only Purple show where I left unsatisfied. The band was in great form, as you can see, by JTL DID not fit in with the group. I already have a ticket for the next Radio City show (although it means missing BB King, Al Green and Etta James who are performing that same night at MSG) and I KNOW the show will be a lot better.

May 21st, 2007 at 09:35Hang on – is it really Ne York or maybe somewhere in England? Paicey’s bass drum skin during the S & M tour had always the colours of the flag of the state they played. Here we see the red cross on white, so definitely it must (or should be) England (where did they play then? London, Manchester, NEC I think…)

PS. Having said that, I watched this clip with a tear in my eye – Blackmore, although long gone, is still dearly missed, no matter who the vocallist was… And yes, in places he’s playing like a man possessed.

May 21st, 2007 at 17:48Joey Lynn was a good singer for the pop crap rainbow put out. But what the hell was ritchie thinking putting in Deep Purple. Ritchie does rock but that was just awfull.
May 21st, 2007 at 17:56As tomekdp says it must be from England. Does it matter though? What it does show is that the fire and spark was back. Despite the criticisms many make of Joe, more importantly it does show how Ritchie drove and directed the band on stage. I doubt anyone can truly say that Lazy has sounded as exciting as this since his departure.

Good to see the Moody Blackmore doing his stuff, but hey life moves on. No good living in the past. The Man In Black left to do other things, namely strumming a banjo in some medieval farce.
We have to be content with the ‘NOW’ that is Deep Purple 2007.

May 23rd, 2007 at 12:47I asked Ritchie back then, “why Joe LT?”, and he told me, “everybody else was CRAP”, referring to all the singers that auditioned. i always wished Ray Gillan would’ve made the band (may he R.I.P.), LOVED his voice, had a Coverdale-ness to it, and just a funny coincidence with his name.

June 3rd, 2007 at 22:18JLT was fine for DP. And at least he could sing mk1 and mk3 songs, and his behaviour was rather funny. Arrogant but in a funny way. Blackmore was suddenly in a fine form, the songs from S&M became fantastic on stage. “Truth hurts” or “Cut runs deep” were highlights. And “King of dreams” was such a brilliant tune, if only they could get rid of “Highway star” now and get Gillan sing a JLT song instead… or bring back JLT when Gillan plays the capricious diva. 😀
June 8th, 2007 at 07:38Joey is a incredible singer, but you cant tell from this. He looks silly! Ritchie is doing what Ritchie does live, bury everybody else, nearly all the time. It almost seems as though they had a bit too much tea, as the tempo is out of control. I’d like to hear it with the harmonica as part of a bluesy intro.
