Stargazer at Wacken
This weekend the Rock Meets Classics performed at Wacken Open Air. Joe Lynn Turner was part of the gang, and they performed Stargazer in tribute to Ronnie James Dio:
Performers:
Joe Lynn Turner
Mat Sinner Band
Bohemian Symphony Orchestra Prague conducted by Bernard Fabuljan
Complete 86 minute performance of Rock Meets Classics will be available for your viewing pleasure from arte.tv until November (at least as far as my German goes). And I must admit, despite my scepticism towards these “cover bands on steroids”, it is a lot of fun. But then again, we already knew that Thunderstruck pretty much anything performed on cellos is a lot of fun, didn’t we?
Thanks to Martin Ashberry for the heads up.
The band is great, with the Primal Fear guys really stepping up. Great performance, with the solo being played in a very Blackmore-ish vein.
August 5th, 2015 at 17:04It’s not bad at all….just weird to listen to this song without Ronnie Dio.
I personally like JLT, but I don’t think that Ritchie’s mother-in-law shares the same feeling !
August 5th, 2015 at 17:09Pretty much wasn’t awful.
August 5th, 2015 at 17:21Fantastic performance from Mr Turner. I did watch the live stream from WACKEN. So Mr Blackmore does the fans a favour and get togehter with Mr Turner for a RAINBOW-Reunion.
August 5th, 2015 at 17:53You can watch the full concert here:

Have a nice Day!
August 5th, 2015 at 18:10Great show, accept for joe linda turner. He sucks, again. 🙁
August 5th, 2015 at 18:14Fantastic to see and hear this magical song played very very well and in front of a large crowd…wonder what blackers thought of it..hmm give joe a call and get Rainbow on the stage
August 5th, 2015 at 19:37Could be worse, it’s actually decent and I doubt he’s performed to a crowd that size in some time. @2, You must’ve missed Over The Rainbow or never heard a cover of Stargazer before. @5, Thanks for the link. @6, Of all the flack JLT has taken from the fans who don’t exactly define fans, it just seems old hat to go after him when he’s easily singing as good or better on stage as he ever has. It’s like some kind of vendetta or something, yawn. @1, But I did take the Stone Cold satire lyrics to be as funny as intended, no harm in that and pretty well deserved from his own rumor starting. 😀
August 6th, 2015 at 03:33Very, Very Good!!!!!
August 6th, 2015 at 04:24Uncle Joe … you want to make Rainbow alive … But it wouldnt … and if it will be … without YOU !!!

August 6th, 2015 at 11:29Fantastic performance!
August 6th, 2015 at 11:46Thought JLT was pretty good, a very tough song, but handled well and perfect for the orchestration. Oh to have seen the late great RJD in similar setting.
August 6th, 2015 at 16:47Everyone knows how Joe can be incredibly corny and does the worst stage raps ever, but you can’t fault his performance here (as a matter of fact I have never seen him sing badly). He almost impersonates Dio’s style here, but not in an enbarrassing way, rather as a tribute. I have no issues with it, I believe Ronnie would have appreciated it as well. Nice to hear that song at Wacken of all places.
August 7th, 2015 at 16:59I agree that it’s a good performance and wouldn’t mind another live album. It still makes me think back around the Slaves & Masters era when he said he wouldn’t sing someone else’s drivel (or dribble?), but he’s kind of made a career out of doing just that.
August 7th, 2015 at 20:07I have to give JLT lots of credit, he comes through for the fans and he loves the music. That was a well done production. I’d like to seem him on stage with Blackmore again.
August 8th, 2015 at 12:53JLT been on the pies it seems.
August 8th, 2015 at 22:36Well actually,i think that this is rather good….One of the better versions i’ve heard of this song done live,Rainbow never made it justice….Well ‘Castle Donnington version with Bonnet is great, but Rainbow MK2 never got this one of the ground live.
August 9th, 2015 at 20:31Graham Bonnet has a much more distinctive voice, and although he can be goofy I hope Ritchie works with him again. Grahams vocal performance of Stargazer at Donnington is way better than this. What are those gloves for?
August 10th, 2015 at 11:43Very impressive performance by Joe Lynn Turner. He performed admirably and sung at times with immense passion and power. Great, great effort. Superb concert and credit to all the performers.
August 10th, 2015 at 20:42And the JLT tribute act continues…..unfortunately
August 11th, 2015 at 08:57Kudo’s to Joe and people over here having the grace to listen objectively to his performance for once.
August 14th, 2015 at 09:12Not bad, of course. It is such a great song that, with a minimum of competence, it works. Yet… I’m a bit tired of the Nth stravaganza (somebody said ‘cover band on steroids’; quite a good definition) with orchestras that, honestly, do not offer anything really worth listening to. Deep Purple’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra, just as the rest of things Jon Lord did along those lines, is wonderful precisely because it is an original composition trying to unify these two worlds. But playing Rainbow (or Queen, or Metallica… you name it) accompanied by an orchestra doesn’t interest me at all, I just cannot see the point of it. Also, at least in the case of this Stargazer rendition, the band and the orchestra are clearly not well pasted, and it shows. As for JLT, it is really curious: as somebody has reminded us, he once said he wouldn’t be singing somebody else’s dribble. Well, why is is then that he has been doing precisely just that for the last I don’t know how many years? Is it by any chance that his own stuff just doesn’t work any longer? In case it ever really worked… I cannot say he’s a ‘bad’ singer; he isn’t. He is a reasonably correct one, but that’s it. Apart from this, what I certainly find ridiculous is his obsession with looking ‘forever young’, having his hair dyed when he’s already 64. And I do not know (and couldn’t care less, by the way) if he has gone through plastic surgery, which wouldn’t surprise me: well, in case he has, he should ask for a refund or sue the surgeon… OMG, my granma looked better and she died 102… I know JLT is not the only one, but he is certainly pathetic… What a difference with the poise and dignity of Jon Lord, with his white-hair pony-tail, for example.
