The individual movements are based on the personalities (or egos) of Deep Purple Mk II. It was originally commissioned by the BBC, and was performed live by Deep Purple together with the orchestra of the Light Music Society, conducted by Malcolm Arnold, on 17th September 1970 at Festival Hall in London. Engineered by Martin Birch, Dave Stock, Mike Gray and Philip McDonald. Produced by Jon Lord(?).

The individual pieces are based on various dances that occur frequently in baroque suites by Bach and others. Or as the sleeve notes explain it: "The theme behind the music is that of a baroque dance suite. A form of music which was brought to its highest level by Bach." The album was recorded between 3rd and 6th September 1975 at the Stadt Halle Oererckenschwick near Düsseldorf with the Dieter Dierks Mobile Recording Studio using Agfa P.E.M. 408 master tape. Engineered by Martin Birch (The wasp). Remixed by Martin Birch at Musichland Studios (Munich), who was assisted by Hans Menzel. Mastered at Kendun Recorders in Burbank CA. Produced by Jon Lord and Martin Birch.
